Arrow weight!
« on: April 27, 2012, 05:14:00 PM »
Ok, figured out how to fletch arrows with 5" feather, now arrow weight! I read/was told, 10 grains/lb of pull on your bow. Therefore I will need 540 grain arrows. I have Gold Tip 5575 Expedition Hunters, 30.5" long, and they already have inserts glued into them. Will be putting 5" feathers on them. What weight field point/broadhead will put me in that range? I was thinking along the lines of 250-300 grains. Thanks!!
That which doesn't kill me, will make me stronger!

Probably around 225 grains. One thing to remember is that you need to tune your arrow to your bow. You might need a heavier point, and that may or may not be 10 grains per pound. The most important thing is to have perfect arrow flight. The weight is a secondary consideration.

In terms of GPP.  Alot depends on the type of bow.  Longbows like a Hill style will do better with the heavier arrows.  You can get by with lighter arrows in some recurves.  Many bowyers will be quite happy if you shoot 8-9 GPP in their bows.

As stated, your point weight should ultimately be a function of what flies best in your bow and doesn't result in an under/overspined shaft.  Buy a test kit with an assortment of points from one of the sponsors like 3 Rivers. They run about $8 and will make your life easy over time as you change arrows, bows etc.

Tuning is paramount.

For weight....i recommend the digital scale from 3Rivers Archery. It's $20 and works great

Follow the given advice above.  I hear and read where so many guys just blab "10 gpp" is the "only way" to get a quite bow or good penetration.  Get your arrow tuned to a properly braced bow with string silencers and all will be well regardless of gpp.  The 8-10 gpp recommendations are bowyers, not penetration standards.

If you are trimmed tight you will probably need the 200 or 225 head.  If you have a couple inches hanging over, probably gonna use less. It will be a direct function of what your true draw length is.  Long draws are less acceptable of a wide range of point weights versus a short draw if the arrows are trimmed with 1 inch of trim in my expierence.  And carbons stiffen real quick when trimmed less than 28 inches.

That 5575 shaft is spined at 28 inches towards that upper weight, so shooting it at 30 1/2 has softened it up some, but like I said your final tune will be a function of your true draw length, arrow length, and point weight.  Just gonna have to see for yourself.

BTW, good luck and enjoy.  Find what works for you and get lethal.  Good arrow flight and shot placement kills, and good bow tuning is what quietens bows, not gpp.  God Bless

I have a 40 lb hybrid. That shoots 8.5 grins nicely but I agree tune first then arow weight so with cedar I'm up to 9.4 gr per lb. Ca rules wood to compete.

You need to let your whole arrow selection and building process be dictated by tuning. With some practice you can pick a shaft that will come close to being tuned with the point weight and total arrow weight you want.

Hey I am shooting a 50lb longbow and a 45lb grizz with ce 150's with a woodsman 150. They fly well but, I am wondering would a heavier head like a 175 or 200 give me more penetration? Thanks.

LBshooter2,changing to a heavier point will weaken the dynamic spine of your arrow so if they are tuned now, they won't be after adding more point weight. An untuned arrow is one of the worst robbers of bow energy and will definitely reduce penetration,by itself.

If you have arrows that can still be tuned to the heavier heads,by shaft length trimming etc,the extra weight up front might help a little.

My first concern would be to have the arrows well tuned. It is probably the most important aspect for getting the most out of your setup and having your broadheads hit wear your practice arrows do.The tuning information at bowmaker.net is an excellent source.
