This arrow hates me
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:51:00 PM »
Shooting lefty now with my new to me FA Skookum 50# @ 28 inches. I draw near 30 inches consistently. I'm trying to get things tuned up and I cannot for the life of me figure this out, so here goes...

Predator II's 30/50 spine full length 145 grain pts ... fly good

Predator II's 45/60 full length (any) grains ... wears the outside of the shelf...WAY outside of the shelf, almost on the grip.

Easton 2117 33 inch 125 points... fly pretty good

30 inch cedar shafts made by Ekin for a 53# @29 inch hill bow with 125 grn points... fly the best

NOW... what the heck is up with the 45/60's? I should be able to get them tuned with a point weight between 125 and 250 but no matter what I get inconsistent flight and weird shelf wear.

The moral of this story is that your bow likes woodies.

The only time your arrow should touch your arrow rest is when you draw you bow, after you release the string arrow paradox take over and if your arrow are spined correct they should not hit your rest you can watch this on youtube
Have you tuned with a bare shaft? you might need to move your nocking point up or down, also are you shooting split finger or three under? this could have and effect on your arrow flight.

I have tuned bareshaft and get pretty good results with all of the arrows, even the 45/60s. They are a bit inconsistent though.

I show only minimal wear on the arrow shelf for all but the 45/60 predators which show wear on the outside...WAY outside... of the arrow shelf no matter what point weight I use.

So....you've got 3 types of arrows flying well and one that sucks.  Why are you wasting time with the 45/60s?  I'd toss 'em and go with the woodies...

I'm an anaylitical type, so I want to know WHY they are bad. It's interesting to me.

fair enough.

I've had outside wear when the nock point is a hair high (like 1/16").  Otherwise the arrows flew great; other than wear outside the shelf you'd never know there was a problem.

Bare shaft one?

The 45/60 is a .400 spine same as a 2117, but being carbon its gonna take alot more weight on the front. Its also almost 3" shorter than your 2117, 250g might not be enough weight.
