bow brands seem to cycle
« on: May 12, 2012, 10:32:00 AM »
I checked the classifieds for close to a year to find a used Silvertip recurve that would fit me with no luck.
Well, I gave up and ordered one, and now I can't seem to look in the classifieds without tripping over several each day.
Do certain bows makes cycle in and out on the classifieds, or is it just me?

I think the economy forces cycles and the brand makes no difference IMHO

Good bows always have a fallowing but maybe folks cut the herd to pay the bills and only own one???

I do think bows go in cycles. Some bowyers get hot at certain times and some styles go in and out. I also think the economy is forcing guys to evaluate their bow stable. The high dollar works of art that never see the woods get beat out by old reliable when the chips are down.

Things definitely go in cycles - which can make for some great deals if you're looking for something when that particular model is around.  Some others almost never show up, or if they do they're snatched up so fast it'll make your head spin.  One of the best things learned since I've started trad shooting is patience - sooner or later, if you keep your eye's peeled, you'll spot what your after.

kat, most of the Silvertips that showed up are been sold pretty fast and some of the guys that sold them had already ordered a new one with different specs or woods. If you follow TG you see the quality and artistic bar is been arised quite a few in the last years.Because the economy very few are lucky enough to keep all of their bows so when they buy a new one they have to let go a older one.IMHO.

The economy has a role, but it's cyclic to a degree, you'll see Hills for a bit [spurred on by the now famous Hill thread] guys get them and they are not what they thought, up for sale they go. For a while it was Rivers Edge, a few Widows now and then and so on. What's good about it, it provides guys and gals to try a bow that they thought they might like for a much reduced cost. That's how I got 5 sets of ILF limbs....lol! In my trial and error I have found an excellent combo that I'm shooting well. I hope the cyclic activity on the Classifieds continues...

Patience coupled with a quick release, absolutely.  I missed out on a good one last yesterday when I went out to grill like the lady asked - that was all the time it took.  I DID get nice supper, and I've still got the girl!

I have noticed that the more discussion on this site about a particular brand of bow the hotter they become. Meaning if one shows up it is sold quickly.

Drew- sometimes it feels that way.   :biglaugh:    :biglaugh:
Manny- Actually the Tip I was talking about was the one I shot at our last stumpshoot; but I was lucky enough to get a longbow Silvertip from Dave and Beth a month later.

I think guys just wait until hunting season is over and then look for a new bow or had one on order from last summer. If you are selling your bow during hunting season then you need money. Just my thoughts.

Another thing I've noticed is that it seems when someone has a good experience with a bow and writes about it here, that brand will pop up in the classifieds.  Some folks may read some of the "dream bow" posts and find someone looking for a certain bow and then list that type.

I've bought a couple bows that folks have PMed me about when they saw I was considering one.

Two of the very successful techniques for spurring interest in bows that I've seen here lately are:

1. Build alongs. That build-along with the trio of Big Foots had to generate a bunch of activity (got me and I'm glad for it!).

2. The pass arounds must also work? I'm about to be part of a lefty pass around.

All good ideas and techniques to me. No arm twisting just friendly suggestions.

Ken,

I have noticed that when I was either looking for a specific bow in the classifieds (mostly to see pictures of them) I would not be able to find them.  Then one day there would seem to be 3 or 4.

Likewise when I had certain bows for sale I would wait until there were not any others listed for a few weeks or even a month.

within hours of listing a bow 3 or 4 others would pop up. Its enough to drive a man Mad at times        :knothead:

Glad you love your new bow.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

I typically see the cycle go something like:
1. one of the better known Tradgang personalities gets a bow from bowyer X and extols its many attributes.
2. It becomes the hot bow and within a short period of time lots of people are posting reports and pics of the great new bow from bowyer X.
3. Bowyer X is inundated with orders and now has a 10-15 month waiting list.
4. 4-6 months later bows from bowyer X are showing up on the classifieds as people move on to the next hot bow.

This usually happens when a new talented bowyer pops on the scene or a a relatively unknown bowyer suddenly gets some good press and face time on the chat threads.

It can also happen to established bow brands that get exposed to the newer ever increasing membership of Tradgang that may not be familiar with brands we already know and love.

Get a few nice pieces of eye candy posted from a bowyer coupled with a glowing review and you will have good classifieds material down the road if you're willing to wait it out.
