New shooter ???
« on: May 13, 2012, 07:21:00 PM »
Hey guys and gals hows it goin?!

just a few questions from a new guy... (im sure you answer these all week, lol)

I've been debating buying a recurve and going traditional with hunting... I'm finally ready to pull the trigger!

I've been searching and stalking these forums and on AT for awhile. Learned some new things i didn't know about recurves...

I'm thinking of the Samick sage? #45 range if possible @ 28"

After recieving the bow, what would be my next step?

I would like to shoot wooden arrows as well...

Any input or thoughts please!

Thanks
God bless

The sage is a great starter bow. You can buy limbs seperately, so I would consider starting at 35 or 40, and really get form down.

Buy heavier limbs down the road, or probably a different bow like most do.

But always good to have a light bow around to work on form.

What Medley said... Watch as many videos as time allows... Mobow on the shooters forum has some great videos. As far as that goes study the shooter forum, back tension, release, and general form.

Study Stu's Arrow Calculator and OL Adcock's tuning site. Then shoot straight and have fun!!!

Thanks Medley.

as far as arrow choice... In the compound world you just have to read a chart basically and depending on what spine your shooting for... you choose as I'm sure everyone here knows. In the trad world I'm assuming you don't get this option? So whats the best way to figure my correct spine (even a tad bit over spined I prefer) without buying a half dozen arrows just to find out their wrong...?

I wold like to start maybe three field point arrows, and I really like the blunt/stump tips for shooting small game and at sticks and what not! Thats my game plan for arrows, and like stated above... I would like wooden arrows.

What steps should I take here?

thanks

Thanks Hobble!

I will most definatly try and perfecct my form... But first base is choosing a bow... My intentions are to hunt with it, and of course rec shoot with family and friends throughout the year. Is there any other "budget" bow that carries the same qualitys as the sage?

I know theres no such thing as a "cheap Porche" but a will sacrifice the rare woods/materials in a nice bow for comfort shooting, or a little heavier bow over noise...

Is there anything else I should be thinking about now that would judge my choice in bow. I'm really taking my time with this and want to really analyze bows and wait for "the right one" before I just rush into this... Plus I see/hear this can be a frusterating sport compared to wheels/pulleys. So the better off I can start myself the better my chances the way I see.

Thanks you two for the replys, I appreciate the help... looking forward to much more!
