Aluminum Footings?
«
on:
May 16, 2012, 07:20:00 PM »
Just wanted to see if anybody out there utilized aluminum footings on their carbons and if they used them in hunting conditions.
I was curious in regards to penetration: specifically...do the footings affect penetration on deer?
Just curious....i have a few arrows that i have done this to and was thinkg about doing it to all of them, just wanted to see what others thought.

I've been using 1" footings of 2216 aluminum on my 7595 GTs for a lot of years.
Does not impede penetration at all. If anything it improves it, and it makes the arrow a lot tougher.

P.S.
I do it on all my arrows, both target & hunting.

I foot every carbon arrow before taking a shot. They don't affect penetration but I always use a broadhead who's ferrule is wider than the footing.

I use 1" on my mfx's for EVERYTHING. Makes a great arrow even better. If you read Dr. Ashby's arrow penetration reports one of the failures he found was a failure behind the broadhead to shaft breakage. If they break with the footing now I feel I did my best to prevent it.I also use steel adapters with brass inserts.

there is or was one in the HOw to section, it's titled how to make a bomp proof stump arrow. I just went to the bow shop, found an aluminum shaft that barely.....just barely fit over my shaft. I took a cheap pipe cutter and cut one inch sections off and then used 5 minute epoxy to adhere to the shaft. Worked for me!

In the How To section there is also an excellent aluminum shaft chart at the top of the page that gives inside diameters for all the different aluminum shafts.Check with your carbon manufacturer for your exact shaft diameter and pick an aluminum shaft that has an inside diameter slightly larger.
