Had a couple in my front yard this very morning...first time for that this year since I'm a few houses into town.
make your bow QUIET, these buggers are wired tighter then a quitar string. You can shoot through em easily, hitting them is another story. I don't care how fast your bow is, they will jump quicker. I've seen new wheel bows not keep up several times.
Also IMO there is no bigger spot and stalk challenge available, that I am aware of. being so high strung with incredible vision, and nearly always in herds, they are a huge challenge. Though, if you're still when they are looking at you, theres no need fo camo. I've killed em with a carhart coat and blue jeans. Heck, they are curious enough that if they aren't alarmed and they see something weird laying on the ground, they might just walk up and check you out. I know an old guy here that gets one with his bow just by waving a white flag in the air until their curiousity gets the better of them.
the vast majority of speed goats are taken from a blind at a waterhole.
alot of people are using decoys now, with some success. Back in the day as kids we used to make antelope decoys out of cardboard. They worked great, so i can only imagine what a one of the new lifelike decoys would do, however I don't use em anymore.
don't forget, they rely heavily on the skyline for their vision. So, never walk over one upright. if you can get a decoy up on a horizon, all the better.
During the rut antelope are VERY territorial of their does. I've seen bucks chase a rival away that was 200 yards from his harem, and keep running him down for a long way, only to run full speed back and do it again. they'll keep that pace up all day. If you can stalk with a decoy within 100 yards and pop that bugger up, odds are good you'll get his dander up. get off to the side of your decoy if possible, cause they almost always freeze head on.
Also, they can be called. They have a snort-wheez sound that kind of resembles an elk bugle with chuckles in cadence. a long wheez followed up by 10 or so short stacatto ones. its a challenge/statement of dominance the bucks give to each other. Works wonders in combination with a decoy.
The other sound that is dynamite is a grunt/moan, its my perferred trick. It's an interesting sound. If you can get to where you can make it, and get anywhere near his does before you do it hoeld up behind a sagebrush, you can pull a buck off of a harem, he'll come looking for you. This is why I now prefer no decoy. I can get one coming to look for me, then it puts him in a much more relaxed position to be shot. Its the sound of a buck looking for or tending a doe, i believe.
