Backing an old Ben Pearson
« on: June 11, 2012, 01:55:00 AM »
I have an old Ben Pearson 503-1 in great shape.  It's an all wood bow.
Would backing this bow be a good idea?  I'm thinking sinew or snakeskin or both. My main concerns would be backing a fifty year old bow then it failing, or damaging a collectors item.
It shoots great like it is just thought it'd be a little different.

Good question.  I have an old lemonwood Pearson that was my dad's, bought it at the factory in Arkansas a loooong time ago.  At some point before I inherited the bow, the lam's came off the bows belly and are lost.  It has beautiful green glass lams on the back.  I'd love to find some green glass and restore the bow, not to shoot but just to keep.  Have not been able to find a source though.

I had an old lemonwood bow given to me.  It had a black fiber backing that was partially gone.  I cleaned the old backing off, and glued on a hickory backing from 3 rivers.  The bow turned out ok but I think it is now about 75 lbs draw weight.

kstout I thought about just doing clear on the belly, but I'd really like to match the green on the front - looks awesome on that yellow wood

Right now it draws close to 50@28. Would I gain any performance with sinew?  Would it increase the draw weight?
