I held history!
« on: June 12, 2012, 03:04:00 PM »
One of our neighbors at our hunting farm is Bill Barringer-wildlife artist. He is friends with my grandpa and is a dyed in the wool trad bowhunter. I went over to his house this morning to see if he could show me how to string up Tue new longbow that was sent to me by Caihlen. After getting it strung up and shooting for a while, we go inside to check out his awesome collection of sheds, mounts, pictures, bows and arrows. While inside, he pulls an older looking Bear riser out of a drawer and hands it to me. On the side I see the words "To my good friend Bill"-Fred Bear   To say that I was in awe would be an understatement! I will try and get a picture next time, I just didn't have a camera on me  unfortunately. Bill is a great guy and an incredible trad hunter, he even gave me a few razorheads to "practice your sharpening skills" as Bill said. These last few days I have been reminded that even if I may not have a custom made bow, or hundreds of private land to hunt, or all the arrows and broadheads I could ever want, I still have countless blessings in my life. There isn't a happier guy around right now I can guarantee you that. Just thought I would share, and I will try and get some pics here soon

It's amazing just how little it takes(not that holding that riser wasn't significant)to make us really appreciate what we do. I'm sure that little meeting with 'Bill' was like getting your batteries 'recharged'.  I'm glad for you.

Great story, to find mentors, even for short periods of time, is what makes our character.  Your feelings of awe will develop this traditional passion into a lifelong event.

Cool
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Not only is Bill an incredible wildlife artist (check out his work Bill Barringer) but he has taken a buck with his longbow or recurve every year since I believe '76 lol. So to say he knows how to hunt would be an understatement. He has framed topo maps of his hunting ground, public ground and neighboring timber all over his workshop. He showed me a trick where he takes some kind of shaving razor, takes out the bleeders on Bear razorheads and kind of sinks the shaving razor down in the slot where the bleeder was. Looks like a really deadly head, but he prefers Howard Hill heads. I look forward to many years of learning from him, and hopefully dragging a deer out for him (grandpa gave the ok for Bill to put up a stand on our property) my luck he is going to tag out on the big buck I've been chasing for years
