Bareshaft tuning with UNI bushing?
«
on:

I have ordered some Beman ICS Energy 780 shafts to work up an arrow for my wife.I have never used a UNI bushing but I think it is glued in as an adapter for the G nock.I will also use a halfout insert so I can try different point weight.
How can I attach the UNI bushing so that it can be removed if I need to cut the shaft down to stiffen it?

Use some hot melt glue. When you need to remove the bushing, just heat the end of the shaft with a heat source (I use a propane torch but a lighter will do) and the bushing will come right out.

These are all carbon shafts. How much heat will they take? I thought carbon didn't like direct heat.

Dont heat the end of carbon w/torch unless you want a ruined shaft.

Put a field tip in and heat that and use pliers to pull on the tip and remove the insert. Don't put the heat directly on the carbon shaft.

Will I have to adjust length from the halfout insert end? Should I use the hotmelt as a temporary bonding agent.

Hot melt at least until you get it tuned at the final length. Straight shaft, trim from the front until you get the right length/point weight combo you like. You can do a more permanent glue after if you like, but the hot melt is fine also plus it gives you the ability to tune the arrows in the future if you go to a heavier bow or point weight.

Thanks everyone, this had me stumped as I usually just pop the nock and trim and pop it back in.

My bad guys...I didn't catch that these were carbon shafts. I saw the words "uni-bushing" and my brain said "aluminum".
The method still works, it's just at a much lower heat level.
I've done the same thing with Goat Tuff as well. A little heat and nocks, bushings etc... will pop right out.
