New here, having a look around!
« on: June 22, 2012, 01:45:00 PM »
Hey everyone,

I am new here and spent some time looking around before I was a member and thought that this would be the place for me to learn all there is about traditional bows!

I went to my grandparents house last night, we got on the subject of hunting. My grandpa showed me some of his firearms and things but my grandma told me she had something really cool!!!

She dug into the back of her closet and pulled out a recurve bow. She handed me a Howatt Diablo. it reads 45# @ 28" with what I am guessing is a serial number under it: EDV3639.X8" The X is a digit that I think is worn off or at least I cant read it!

Here is a link to a photo album of the bow. Any information you all have about it would be amazing!

 http://s648.photobucket.com/albums/uu201/1Gen_SI86/Rrrrrrrr%20Recurve/

It measures 52.5 inches tall from tip to tip. I am wondering what length and material string I need to replace the old and worn one with.

Thanks so much!

The "X" would be a "5", meaning this is a 58" bow as measured along the curves from nock to nock.  String should be dacron such as B50 or B500, and 54" actual length; measure the old string to be sure.  Damon Howatts are excellent bows and yours looks to be very clean and straight.  It needs a new rest or shelf rug and it will be a great shooter.  I would SWAG it as a late 60's model, but the guys in the collectors forum will have a better idea of that.

BTW, Welcome to the Gang!

Thank you so much for the info! I will head over to the collectors forum and chat with them about it. I dont know if it is the age of the string or is just what they used at the time but it measures from the end of each loop 51 3/4".

It is still a bit dirty, I cleaned it up last night, dusted it off, and took the 'sight?' off and soaked it in some simple green to get the caked on dirt off. There was also a piece that I am not too sure of its exact function. It is a thin piece of curved metal with 2 rubber cylinders on it. I think it may be to help hold an arrow? Ill post another pic soon.

Thank you so much guys! Take it easy

So I decided to order somethings and try to show the diablo some love.

Gave it a little lipstick and it is looking great compared to the pictures in the original post!
