question 'bout skinny strings

i've been reading about these skinny strings and am wondering if they are to only be used on bows that are  FF  safe regardless of the material used to make them (strings). I shoot an older martin mamba (80's) and would like to try a skinny string but am sure that my bow isnt FF safe. I make my strings now 16 strand B50.  Thanks  Scott

Yes, you are correct.  As far as I am aware only FF material is suitable for skinny strings and should only be used on bows that are FF safe.

Martin didn't start making their recurves FF capable until 1995 or 1996.Those recurves have black fiberglass tips on them.How heavy is your bow,I use 14 strands of B50 on bows upto 60#.I'll use 16 strands for bow over 60#.

You can go down to about 12-14 strands of Dacron but it will be harsh on the bow.

I would not recommend building anything under a 14 strand dacron string for that bow.

I would use a 12 strand Dacron with that bow and weight.

Steve Gorr, of Cascade Archery, and maybe one of the best barebow shooters on the planet, once told me that 12 strands of B-50 was enough to handle any bow up to and over 80#'s.

12 strands of dacron will be fine, it will just stretch more than 14 0r 16.  Don't expect a big performance gain--you'll be dissapointed.  Might get a better nock fit and less noise though.

how much difference is there between B50 and dacron?  strength/stretch/durability/cost? I have B50 on hand and am not really wanting to invest in another material unless there is a large benefit in it. Is dacron usable for non FF bows?

B50 is Dacron. B55 is another choice that is safe and is supposed to be lower stretch.  Shouldn't any issues going 12 or 14 strand, but like stated above, its likely you won't notice much if any  difference.
