Gold Tip insert/weight question
« on: July 17, 2012, 09:31:00 AM »
OK, I'm a noob when it comes to carbon arrows but I wanted to put some together just to see how I like em.  I have some 5575's cut 29" which are a bit stiff for the bow I'm shooting right now (45# @ 28 Kodiak Magnum), so I got some Gold Tip weight screw intending to add 100 gr. up front.

I popped the inserts out of a couple and find that the weight screws don't want to thread onto the insert.  What am I missing?  These look like basic GT inserts, but I didn't put them in myself.

Mike those shafts are just not gonna work with your setup without going to some way excessive tip weight.  I would suggest getting some 35/55 or 500 spine shafts and start with those with some heavy inserts in them.
It is possible that the base of the insert is clogged with glue, just run a 8-32 tap down thru the insert and that should clean it up.

Some .600's would be even better for that bow.

Thanks guys but this wasn't a shafting question, I know what spine would work best BUT I already have the 5575's and am going to shoot them for stumping or whatever; the fact is they are not shooting that stiff out of the bow as is.  And, they'll work in my heavier bow when my shoulder gets better.

All I wanted to know is how to make the weights work.  Mark - I'll try running a tap in; just wanted to make sure I wasn't dealing with apples/oranges.

I'm shooting 46# and a 29" gt 3555 w/ 50grn weight and 145-155 tip they fly like darts. The Inserts may be the older inserts you have but they may have glue in threads as mentioned in thread

Chris - that gets to the point of my question; I didn't know if there were different types of inserts.  These are threaded and look visually like the regular GT inserts.  The weights are GT.

I you just need them for stumping just get points, these go up to 300 grains and forget about removing the inserts

Mark, I was able to clean up the threads with a tap so all is well.  Going to bareshaft with 250 gr up front and see how she does; if still too stiff I'll save them for my heavier bow.
