Sporting Goods Store Pagosa Springs Co
« on: July 18, 2012, 12:03:00 AM »
I was inn Pagosa Springs Co on vacation a couple of weeks back. I found a sporting goods store named Eagle Mountain Mercantile. It has a good selection of hunting and camping gear. They also have a good selection of rifles and pistols.

I was surprised to find a section of trad equipment. There are quite a few custom and stock bows hanging on the wall and trad accessories.

The store even has another section dedicated to quilting and sewing supplies so my wife did not hurry me out of there.

The owner's name is Mike Haynes. I stopped in today and he spent an hour or so talking about bows and hunting with me. Really good guy. He has a nice full mount of a mountain goat on the wall that he shot with his longbow. I could have stayed longer but did not want to take up more of his time.

If you are ever passing through stop in and have a look around as the store is well stocked and visiting with Mike might take the edge off of not talking archery during a long trip.

Take care.

Mike.

I was there for a couple days last year and had no idea about the shop.  Too bad.

I met Mike last season.  Wonderful folks and a nice store.  As the weather was turning bad just before my hunt, I got some raingear there.  Worth a visit any time.

I stopped in there 2 years ago on vacation.  You are right, he is a nice guy.  I also was pleased to see some sticks on the wall.

I too stumbled into his place looking to purchase my CO elk license a few years back.  I'll be back in there this fall, if all goes as planned, buying another one.

There are some top trad shooters in Pagosa Springs. I have not seen a better caliber of shooters anywhere, plus they are all fine individuals. They had a nice 3D club but I believe it is currently not in operation. Sure miss going there and seeing them.

Thanks guys for the kind comments.  Mark and Pat are just being nice to me because I make them look good on the range.  They are great guys to shoot with, but I only see them at the CTAS shoot and/or banquet once or twice a year.

Mike, I enjoyed meeting and visiting with you.  Hopefully we'll get together again sometime.

Bill, we had a shoot this past Saturday over here in Pagosa (compounds and trad equipment).  It was the first time I ever used a scorecard in my almost 25+ years of shooting traditional equipment.  It was a humbling experience to say the least.  I met a couple of guys from over near Bayfield who are Trad Gang members and CTAS members.

Anyway, if anyone is ever in the Pagosa Area, feel free to PM or email me and stop by and say hello.

Mike

Glad to hear the club is back in operation. I would have driven over if I had known about it. I have some very good friends in that club and would enjoy seeing them again.

Mike, I am trying to plan a trip this year to hunt on the East Fork area. Any word on how it is looking for this fall? we are planning to be there during the last week of season. Thanks for any help you might have.

Bill and WarDancer,

I don't think we really have a club.  This shoot is an annual shoot called the Mike Valdez Memorial Shoot in honor of a young man who was killed in an accident some years ago.  They raise money and give scholarships to high school seniors.  I'm not sure what happened to the old club that was here in town other than it just fell apart.

As for the hunting this fall, we had a very mild winter but with more moisture than much of Colorado.  The summer "Monsoon" moisture has started strong so we should have a good elk herd for this fall's hunt.

I rode through Pagosa last month. I missed the store. Now I'm gonna have to go back down there.
