Okay everyone,

New bow in the stable and trying to get some arrows to match.

Bow specs.  60" RER Arroyo 53# @ 29.5, FF String, Bamboo Cores for what its worth.

I draw to 29.5 so cut arrows to 30.5 BOP.

I have managed to get nock point set so that is a plus. LOL

However having trouble getting shafts to match.  I am looking for advice on wooden shafts only at this point please.  And would really like to end up with a product that is somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-11 grains per pound finished shaft so 530-580 gr

Current observations for RH shooter
11/32 Tapered bare shaft Doug Fir 80/85 500 grain W/O point
125 grain point = tail left
160 grain point = tail left
(cant really tell any difference between the two)
Same shaft with 4X4 fletching and both point weights appear to kick tail left before recovering

11/32 Tapered spruce shaft 70-75 spine 4X4 banana fletch 535 gr including point (125gr) and when shooting still appears to kick tail left for some time before recovering

Can anybody interpret these results for me and get me pointed in the right direction?

No input or opinions?  Do you all need any different information from me?

My first thought is your arrows are over-spined.  How is your release?  That can also make a difference.  Nock fit?  Tight can have an effect.  There are tons of variables to consider--hard to diagnose without seeing you shoot.

Caleb,

I don't know what the center cut is on your bow but IF I was shooting your bow, I'd be using a shaft that spined at about 65-70# or 70-75# and playing with it from there.

Here is my thinking.  Your bow is 53@29.5  but I always start my estimates from 28" because that is the basic length for spine in wood.  That would make your bow about 48@28.  So Start "figurin'" with a 45-50# wood spine.  Now add about 7# (roughly 5# per inch) for the 29.5" draw length you have so now your wood spine range would be in the 50-55# range.  Now you cut your shaft to 30.5" for overall length. Add another 5# so you are working with 55-60# spine range.  Add 5# for fast-flight (assumption).  Now you are at 60-65# spine.  Finally add 5# for a center cut bow (another assumption) and your are at 65-70# spine WITH a 125 grain point.  IF you want to use 160 grain points add a final 5# for 70-75#.

This "5# rule" I'm using was developed back in the mostly all wood arrow days and works really well for me.  I think your results are because your arrows are listed at 80-85#.  I think you are too stiff by at least 10#.

Are you willing to give up what you are; to become what you could be?

sort of makes sense.  Sounds like I need to try some heavier points on those 70-75 and see how they turn out.

Thanks LBR and Moebow,

C
