The late Ralph"Biff" Moore's bow

One of our long time Trad Gang members died last week of cancer. He was well known at tournaments in Tn, Alabama and Ms, often shooting with me.

I tried to help him through the courses as his health failed over the years. He made it to the Jerry Pierce shoot but was unable to go out on the course because the cancer had just about used him up.

I fixed him a plate of mud bugs(man, he loved those things) at the Saturday night feed. This was the last time I saw him.

 

Biff had a one of a kind ACS bow, custom made for him after he won it in a fund raising drawing held by the ASTB. He had a 31" draw so he had the bow made to be 32# @ 28" or about 40# at his draw length.

The bow has what is called a "Shockwave" riser made by Troy Breeding, one of a kind. If I remember right Troy said it had over 120 separate pieces of wood glued together to create the effect.

Biff's better half brought the bow by today for me to string up for her to shoot. She took a few shots and asked what the bow might be worth. She is pretty sick as well and will be needing a liver transplant in the future.

I told her I didn't have a clue about the bows worth but would ask the experts. For now she wants to keep the bow and shoot it herself at the Lost Tribe tournaments her a Biff once attended together.

What say you guys about it's worth? Here it is, just like new. If anyone has a good estimate about the bows worth, please PM me. Like I said it is not for sale. I would hate to have some unscrupulous person cheat this nice lady out of the bow in the future for a fraction of what it might actually be worth.

Not sure on the bow's worth, as a newer custom bow it doesnt have the classic values that different year Bear bows would have for example. It is a good bow for the big auction with a reserve. If it were mine, I'd put a 1000.00 reserve on it so it wont sell for less.(She can set the reserve for any amount she wants.) But you will find what type of interest it has in the archery community out there. It may sell for a few grand.  Its all what some individual thinks of it.
 
 I am a crawdad lover too. I'm sorry to hear he is gone, but glad you got to know and shoot with him. At the southern festival coming up, I will have a hefty plate of mudbugs in his honor.

So sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. Looking at it the other way, how lucky for him that he never lost you. My prayers and best wishes also for his archer wife.

That bow is something I have never seen before.
I could see it going for fifteen hundred or more.
I bet that's close to what it would have cost new.

Wow Eric, I didn't know Biff had passed away.  He & Sandra were always a welcome pair at my shoots, good people.

A few years ago these were selling for $1,200+ without the fancy riser.

Seems like prices have come down a little.

I'm gonna say $1,000-1,400.

Biff is pretty hard to recognize in the mud bug picture.

Here he is at Terry's Hill shoot a couple years ago. He has been in and out of remission for the last ten years as well as having multiple heart attacks.  I have never heard him complain about how bad he felt, never.

The riser may have been glued up by Troy, but that is an O.L. Adcock ACS. I am with Kathy, it is worth about $1500, but only if someone is willing to pay that for it, should get at least $1000 out of it though if sold.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your close friend and a fellow archer. I did not know him, but his picture sure looks familiar, like maybe I saw him at Tannehill. His family and friends will be in my prayers.

When I made that riser block it was big enough to make two of O.L.'s bows. The first bow was sent to us at ASTB and right handed. The rest of the riser block was to build another bow should the winner be lefthanded.

Not sure what happened when O.L. built the second bow, but the zig-zag that is on the grip of Biff's bow was supposed to have been on the sides.

Anyway it did make for a true one of a kind bow and still looks sharp as a tack.

Oh! and one other thing. The block only had five pieces to it. Bloodwood, maple, wenge, maple and bloodwood. Still it took close to 20 hours to make the block not counting the time in the oven.
