So my birthday was a few days ago and my girlfriend told me I might have to wait a little for a present.
This morning she tells me she has organised a 6-7 day hunt for a scrub bull in Cairns Australia (couldn't afford a buffalo)with free pigs and barramundi fishing thrown in!!!!!
To say I am in a state of shock is an understatement!
This is a dream hunt for me, but the catch is she can only afford it because it is a cancellation and it is around the 23rd of September... Not too much time to prepare!
This might be a one off chance for me and I really want to do it with a trad bow (haven't shot a compound for about a year now)I need advice on arrow weight and poundage.
I am currently shooting a 60# @ 28" PSE Heritage Raven and I draw right around 28. I just worked up some carbons which are Easton Powerflight 340's 30.5" with 100grain inserts and 125grain heads. Gives me 534 grains. These fly really well and much faster than my previous aluminium set up Which was 30" XX75"s with 250Grains up front and gave me 680 grains.
I don't feel like my bow is the fastest around for that weight and I really like the extra speed I get from the lighter arrows.
I would like advice on whether 60lbs is enough for scrub bulls and what arrow weight is good enough. I am thinking go back to my heavier set up, but do I need to go even heavier?
I know Scrub Bulls are not as tough as Buffalo but they are plenty tough and mean enough for me!
Happy to buy new arrows for this, maybe look at the FMJ's or FMJ Dangerous games?
I always thought if I did a hunt like this it would be well planned out and I would work into a heavier and or more efficient bow for it.
I would love to buy a new bow for the hunt but realistically I doubt I could decide on one, get it here, and get set up in time to be shooting well and go on this hunt.
