Should I be using 600 spine arrows in my 45# 58" recurve?
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:24:00 AM »
My new 45# 58" recurve bow had loud limb slap regardless of brace height.  Some  thought it was due to the weak carbon 600 spine/6.7 GR-IN/100 grain tip arrows causing limb slap like a dry fire affect and suggested 400 spine.  I found the 5575 carbon 400 spine/9.3 GR-IN arrows to be un-tunable and caused large upward rips in the paper test regardless of tip weight or nock placement, where-as the 600 spine arrows with 100 grain tips left perfect bullet holes in the paper anywhere between 0 to 10 yards (haven't tested further yet). I ended up wrapping lamb’s wool yarn around the string ends where they contact the limbs and bow is quiet now.  So should I stay with the 600 spine arrows and the yarn as a good solution or should I dig deeper?  Could shooting the 600 spine arrows cause any damage to the bow even though with the added yarn I can't hear the slap anymore?

No, .600's should be about perfect for that bow.  An arrow that is too stiff can slap the bow and make noise, but that isn't the problem here as you've found.

A heavier (not necessarily stiffer) arrow can also make the bow quieter, but if you add a lot of point weight you'll need to re-tune or go to a stiffer shaft.

Welcome to tradgang sportbob.

Tim's advice is on.

What's your total arrow weight and if your bow is 45# @ 28 are you drawing 28?

What bow do you have?

Some argue that less than 8 grains per pound of bow is dicey. But, I think the bow will speak to you about what it likes. Sounds like it likes what you have going through it. (Silence speaks volumes)

If you can contact your bow manufacturer, check to see what they warranty as far as gpp goes.

If your bow is older, then listen to the bow.

What is your total arrow weight? I would think a 600 spine with the 100 grain tips would be close but an arrow that only weighs 6.7 gpi is very light for a traditional bow.

.400's with 100gr tips are too stiff! Stick with the .600's or go with a .500 with more weight up front. I do agree with the others above that your arrows are very light and (in my book) too light to hunt with.

I also use .600 GT traditionals for my 45 lbs bow. The arrow with a 85 grains point becomes too light. Therefore I fill the arrow with some foam isolation material you use ubder laminate floors. Now I am at 9 GPP, exactly what I want. If you want more info, PM me.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that string! [/i]

I use 500 shafts with 200-250gr points/broadheads for my 45# bows.

The number on the side of the bow means very little these days as to the performance level and arrow requirements.  With our top performing ACS longbow and recurve limbs the spine requirement is often 15-20 pounds heavier then the bow weight.
If you were to shoot a .600 spine on a 45 pound ACS-RC bow it bend the shaft in half.
Heck at ETAR I sent .600 shaft with 85 gr points out with a 34 @ 28 curve and they showed very weak.

My advice is to contact the bowyer and ask for a spine recommendation for your bow.

Thank you all for the quick replies, I feel much more confident now! To answer a few of your questions; This is a new Charron Archery bow, 45# @ 28 and I draw 28.  I had called the bowyer about the limb slap sound and he recommended the 400 spine arrow and stated the 600 spine was too weak. He thought the limb slap sound I heard may be a weak arrow hitting the riser, but this was not the case as the yarn wrapped around the string at the limbs silenced the bow. I would have to get back to you on total arrow weight.  I guess if I would ever like to remove the yarn from the string I would need to go with a 600 spine, heavier arrow/GPP or a 500 spine with heavier gpp with additional weight up front.

Thank you all again,
Bob

If you want a heavy GPI carbon shaft, Heritage 150's with a good bit of point weight would surely quiet your bow. You would probably need a 100 grain brass insert and not  have to cut the shaft much at all. Use 125 - 200 grain points I imagine as well.

These are just some thoughts and a possible option for you. I know the heavier CE Heritage 150 shaft with high point weight made my recurve quieter.

I would think using a 400 spine would be difficult to tune for a 45lb bow, but everyone is different. I tried to use a 400 spine in my recurve and she didn't like it at all... FYI; I pull my bow to about 28 so I am at about 50lbs myself.

505 grains.

I shoot a bit shorter than you, but a couple pounds more.
I am shooting 47#@26".
My shafts are Gold Tip 1535 Trads with a 50 grain brass insert, 175 grain point, and a 1.5" aluminum sleeve at the tip. I also use nock adaters and Mercury nocks. The shafts are 27.5" BOP.

I just had a friend with a 28" draw shoot some out of his 45# bow, (yes, they ran up onto the shelf) and they flew true. If you cut them to 29 or 28.5, and left out the brass insert, you could tweak point weight to perfection, and still be around 10 grains per pound of pull.

This spine is right at the cusp, as I can shoot 3555 shafts at 28", with the same weight at the front, and do as well. They are heavier in total weight, though, so I like the lighter 1535s better.

here's what I shoot...
Morrison Shawnee 43# at 27" 600's with 200 grain tips
Centaur carbon elite 45# at 27" 500's with 75 grain brass insert and 225 grain tips.
Stalker Scout 47# at 27" 500's with 75grain inserts and 250grain tips.
 all arrows are 28" bop.

600's should work for you or 500's with some weight up front
