Thumb Pain After Shooting?
«
on:

Has anyone had problems with the joint connecting their thumb and hand aching after shooting? I put in about an hour today and my joints are not happy... Just curious. I shoot using a modified Asbel high wrist loose handed grip. I think all the pressure goes right into that crook of my hand... Could be that... Just curious if anyone else has this over-use type injury issue?

Sounds familiar, mine is atrhritis. Usually the thumb joint is one of the first places it developes according to my doc. Ice and Alleve helps relieve the discomfort for me. Good Luck!

I was tinkering around once with the grip of my longbow and shot for a while with my bow hand (my left hand) moved far left. This caused me to pull my 65# bow directly into the left thumb joint. I developed tendonitis in my thumb which still bothers me at times. Now I stay with the firm heel grip that Hill bows like best.
When I asked the doctor what to do, he just said not to hold it that way anymore and to take ibuprofen.

Folks, Here is a thought. If you have the center of pressure of the bow pressing directly into the end of the forearm bone on your thumb side of the wrist (radius) there should be NO "thumb joint" pressure. A while back, I posted some pictures that show a suggested bow grip that shows this. Do a search for "Grip Question" and see if that helps. It was on the "Shooter's From Forum."
As I say, there should be no pressure on the thumb joint if done correctly.

More hand shock and different handles can make me feel it. I have changed my handles to alleviate this pain. Staying on top of your bodies inflammatory response helped me greatly......fish oil or better yet krill oil, glucosamine\\ chondroitin , cut out sugar, MSM...

The thumb joint is a weak spot. The small bones in the hand and wrist can also get jammed from shooting. A good chiro can reset these easy enough, but it is something that will return with shooting. Good nutrition and CMO can give relief and healing from the onset of arthritis.
