Oregon Hunters
« on: August 17, 2012, 06:36:00 AM »
being new to this site I'm still getting to know the hunters here in my state.  I'm curious what units you'll be hunting and for what game?   I was also curious if any of you have hunted the Trout Mtn (?) controlled hunt in eastern OR that is traditional only?  I've thought about it but I haven't spent much time in that part of the state.  I've hunted the Rogue, Dixon, Applegate, Evans Creek, Keno, in the sw, Wilson, Trask, Willamette, and Santiam in the NW, Deshutes, Paulina, Fort Rock and Silver lake in Central. Silvies in East Central, Sled Springs and Desolation in the NE.  If your looking for info on any of those units I'd be glad to help as much as I can.  Some of them were miserable and some were one time trips.  I've done much better than the avg on kills.  blacktails I"m running 90%, Elk-Rocky and Rosie I'm running about 70%, Black Bear I'm running about 20%, Antelope 100% Mulies 100% and cougar I'm 0 for 4 in the past 12years.  I've actually seen roughly two dozen but I've only had 4 shots and something always happens.  Of course one of those misses was  when a cat I was tracking decided to lay up in some blackberry bushes until I walked by, I turned just as it pounced and threw my revolver in the general direction and fired scaring her off.  The cat was just starting it's jump as I fired otherwise it would have been a wrestling match.  All the animals above were taken with a ccmbination fo traditional and modern archery, rifle and my last few blacktails and my last bull were with handguns.

I can't help you much...you have hunted way more places than I did  when I was there. There is an Oregon forum down at the bottom of the forums page. It doesn't get a ton of traffic but wouldn't hurt to post there too.
Also, I heard most of the Trout Cr. unit burned up recently. i know a few guys that went down there most years but don't think they are now.

howdy Rod...spend most of my time around Mt hood, or within and hour one direction or another. But I do hunt elk and turkeys further east in the John Day country.

Get up into the Walla Walla and Wenaha when one of my friends happen to draw an elk tag. One friend has a Walla Walla tag this year, so I made him some new doug fir arrows for his longbow.

Oregon Okie is correct, much of the Trout Creek area burned up or is in the process of burning. The whole area is closed to public access as of right now.

You ever go visit John Strunk? He's your neighbor.

Welcome. Those cats are sneaky! I'll be hunting Sled Springs for elk this year...about as close to Wenaha as I'm ever going to get. Use to hunt the coast range on NF when logging was allowed...old days.

Nice to meet you in a cyber way, I don't know John but I've been out of the Traditional stuff for a long time now.  I'm hoping to get to know some local guys and maybe do some shooting with them.  Well hopefully in a year or two from now the Trout Cr area will be better than new.  I know the Biscuit fire a few years ago really brought that area alive.

I took a nice 5x6 bull in Sled Springs two years ago with a handgun.  We didn't see alot but I'm sure bow season is alot different than firearms season.  I hear you on the logging, we still have some going on over here but not enough.  The old timers all tell me the best hunting and animal numbers this area ever saw were for the first two or three decades after the Tillamook burn.  I also saw my hotspots in southern OR go down hill over the years because of the lack of logging, there are more animals in town than in the mountains anymore.

I'm from PC, just down the highway from you, though I'm currently living overseas!  Good to see a fellow 'Mook on here.  I've been to the Trout Creeks 4 times, there are, or were, good numbers of deer in there each time.  The traditional only area has burned up, so it may be a few years before it's huntable again, we'll just have to wait and see.  Most my hunting though has been in the coast range, close to home.

your a long ways from home, I'll be heading out next saturday and seeing if I can't get my first Traditional harvest in many years.  I'll be hunting deer and rosies.  Have fun down under!

I've been hunting the Wilson unit for 22 years now. pretty steep & nasty in spots, but hold lots of rosies. The trick is finding them. We've hung about 70 in our camp the so far...

I hunted John Day & Burns one year.... I like the coast much better, and the rosies are better fed.
