Broadhead and aluminum arrow woes.
« on: August 21, 2012, 01:30:00 AM »
I am shooting an old 45# Ben Pearson Stallion with a Bear Weather Rest. I settled on a 200 gr field point as it seemed to give the best flight I started off with 2016 Gamegetters. They were fletched with 4" feathers. Accuracy was so so. Then I tried some 2117 XX 75's with 5" feathers with the same 200 grain point. Much better. I cant afford to buy new broadheads at this time so I put 100 grain brass inserts in all of my arrows and started shooting 100 gr Magnus 2 blade Broadheads. I also reflecthed 1/2 dozen of the 2016's with 5" feathers. The 2016's now porpoise and corkscrew wildly with a broadhead and they even do it with a field point though its not as dramatic. With a broadhead they always seem to spin wildly off to the left. I never though going from a 4" to a 5" feather would lessen accuracy! I can barely get them to group I think I am done fiddling with them. The 2117's do not hit where I am looking but at least they are grouping with a broadhead. I am getting either consistent high right or high left misses. any suggestions? My friend insists that heating my inserts and turning them so that the blade on the broadhead is in line with the string helps. It sounds like a superstition to me is there any truth to that?
Scott.

You don't mention arrow length but if your arrows are 30" or less I will send you 3 2018's 1 bareshaft '2 fletched just to try and see how they shoot,I have an old ben pearson colt 45@28" and with 175 up front they are a tad stiff and I mean a tad 200 would bring them right in I'm thinking at my 29" draw, if you're shafts are 30" or less 2018's may be the ticket,2016 spine is.531, 2117 is .400, 2018 is .464 weigh a little more than 2117's at 12.28 GPI I'm no expert but if you want to try shoot me your address will ship no strings attatched as I love surwoods and just keep a few around for tuning purposes on friends bows!!!

Scott, your bow is older and cut to center at best, the Bear Weatherest is moving your arrow even further out from center.  You are way overspined, you've even confirmed it to yourself with your broadhead flight above (I presume you are right handed).

You are in the 1816/1916 range to tune that bow IMO.

Broadhead alignment is not going to fix your problem, you're correct it's mostly superstition if your bow is properly tuned it will not make that much difference (I do have a favorite broadhead position and so do many other archers but it has more to do with sight picture than flight).  Anyway broadhead position is not going to fix corkscrewing wild misses.

I too will suggest that you are way overspined. I would try some 1916,1816's and see how they do.

I had the same problem as you.  I'm shooting a old Shakespear Cascade, 45#.  After trying several different arrows, I finally got some Easton Legacy 1916.  Retuned my bow.  After playing around with different point weights, I found 125gr worked best for me.  Try the 1916's, I think you will be happy.
