Shooting Problems

I just bought a new bow, Fred Bear Montana long bow. I have been practicing daily with great results until i shoot with my hunting jacket on. I am finding that when i release, the string catches my jacket sleeve and kicks the arrow out. What suggestions do you all have for me?

Sounds like you need an arm guard.
You have to keep that sleeve from getting in the way of the string, and that is what an arm guard does. I've seen guys use rubber bands and/or a cut-off sock to keep the sleeve from puffing out, too. Just about anything will work, but the string hitting the sleeve will always spoil a shot -- as you have discovered.

I do shoot with an arm guard on my fore arm. The string is catching my upper sleeve. I like the sock or rubber and idea. I will try this. Thank you.

I have an extra long "jointed" arm guard that I wear over a bulky coat sleeve. The joint lets the elbow flex normally, but totally eliminates any sleeve catch.

A friend put me on a Velcro strap a couple of years ago.
They are sold at lowes for tying large bundles,of wires.
About 1 inch wide ,a d ring. Strap feeds through d ring and wraps back on itself with Velcro.
Easy to carry and very easy to put on.

I've seen folks use big rubber bands on the sleeve.  Carry them on the bow quiver and use them when needed.

I'm a fan of sacrificing a black, grey, or olive sock and slipping it over the whole sleeve by cutting the toe area off. Gives good motion and a tight squeeze on the sleeve.

We used a little tape on my son's sleeve-worked fine.

Lord knows I'm the last person to be talking about good form, but isn't this likely a form issue rather than a clothing issue?  I know if it happens to me, I'm probably not rotating my elbow out or letting my shoulder drop.

Fifteen years ago I missed four times in one day because the string was hitting my sleeve. Never happened in prior fifteen years. The difference was I was wearing a large puffy down coat in an unseasonable cold snap. Once I figured out the reason I cut a sleeve out of an elastic camo long sleeve, hemmed each end and covered my entire shooting arm. Works to this day even tho I opened up up stance a little and probably don't need it. Either of these suggestions should work. Luck.

I either use a long armgaurd or a sock.

you could sew a small piece of elastic on the back of the arm of the jacket to keep it tight on the front side, i did this to a snow camo jacket wich usually only gets worn over heavy clothes when its pretty cold.

Realtree makes a sleeve that runs from you shoulder to your wrist. It works great for me when I wear a jacket or lose shirt.

well i tried several of your ideas and two really stood out. I tried the real tree arm sleeve. this really hold your sleeve in tight and i think i will be using this product this year. However the best advise was my shooting stance. while shooting i paid attention and i had a pretty closed form. I opened it up and bingo, problem solved. You're absolutely right, focus on proper form and clothing second was absolutely the best advise. Thank you all for your help.
