Arrow Length Quicky Question?
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:34:00 PM »
Ok Guys...I searched the Forums for an answer since I am sure this or similar has come up? I did not quite find one.

Going with a longer arrow length vs a shorter length? Pro & Con, i.e., I have a 27.5 DL. My bow is rated 53# @ 30" AMO 62", etc. I checked the math, the arrow chart, etc. However, the original owner did all the tuning for his 30" DL, etc. I shot his arrows XX75 2216 cut to 30.75" with 150 2 blade BHd. Roughly set-up equals ~540-545 gr arrow vs if I cut to 29" arrow L ~ 518 to 523 gr arrow.

What are your thoughts on this...BTW, I have been shooting the originals with good accuracy. I am not trying to get out of tuning for me, I am just concerned that the difference will be minimal and I wondered if by using the heavier arrow upon impact and penetration is better?

I will admit that maybe I am a bit biased and used to super fast speeds and deep or complete pass through from my compounds. Oops, I did not mean to say compound...Hehe.

Well, being a finger shooter now (instead of your compound with a release) spine becomes EVERYTHING on your tune.  An inch off that arrow will change some things.  The good news is, on an aluminum, an inch and a half might just be perfect to go to a 175 grain head and break even.  If you haven't already, I'd pick one of these up for just such expiramentation

And I wouldn't even think twice about shooting that bear, he looks like he's go miles of skull.

You really need to be concerned with arrow flight and tuning first.  The 20-30 grains is insignificant but cutting the arrows 1 3/4" shorter will have a dramatic change on the spine.  A really good tool to help you is the Stu Miller Dynamic Spine Chart and then follow the Ol Addcock tuning guide you can Google it.  There is something to be said about the old addage "If it aint broke...."

Good luck, that's a nice looking bear.

Aye! Thanks...I will look up the web site.

And yes, those were my thoughts as to the aint broke way of thinking, then do not touch it. As to the spine change, that was my biggest concern. Due to the charts suggesting going to a different arrow all together. I would almost have to start from scratch to tune. Again, like I mentioned before, I not trying to get out of tuning, its just that I am liking the way its shooting as is so far. Also, I'm not saying there is no room for tweaking. I trying to cut down on the variables. I have read on several Posts, members saying the charts are off etc., and that in part has me freaking out, being that I'm new to traditional gear.

That Fat Bastard has eluded me all of last week. Oh well, like most really big brutes, they are pretty much hard to catch, either very early just after sunrise or very late in the evening. And, believe me, I have tried to train him to come out earlier in the evening. He is just too stubborn and not suicidal.

Length is really irrellevant as long as they are long enough to put a broadhead on and they tune correctly.
