I had to prove myself (and trad archers alike) pics added
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:47:00 AM »
Hello Gang,

A couple months ago on a wednesday evening at church, a gentleman I had been talking to off and on during supper about hunting invited me to hunt his land with him.  He has no hunting partner since his moved away and knows from talking that I rely mostly on public land.  He has 40 hunt able acres behind his house that backs up to the golf course, If anyone has ever hunted around Madison County, IL will tell you, it is a lot of steep hills will almost impenetrable gullies. A lot of Bottoms, and more Acorns, Hickory and PawPaw and Persimmon then you could ever ask for.

So I go out with my son last night to do some scouting, since our schedules finally matched up, and before I came, by he asked me to bring the Bow so he could give it a try and see someone shoot a Longbow. I said sure.

So we are looking around, and Im trying to find an area to hunt and setup.  I have my Longbow and two G5 Small game heads, so Im taking random shots along the way.  Im doing pretty good also.  So Bill decides to start picking items for me to hit.   Now with Bill being a Compounder a lot of his choices where pretty far out, but i have a point on of about 50 yards, so those were the easy ones, but I hit pretty good on that walk and only was out of a 6" area a couple times.

After we get back to the yard, Bill tells me before he lets anyone hunt his property he wants to watch them shoot, because he does not want someone just wounding deer.  I happily agree and tell him i respect his morals and his love for the creatures we are hunting.  So he stands on the 20 and proceeds to stack 4 arrows on top of each other on a little dot.  I then step up and place my 3 FP tipped arrows in a group the size of a softball.  He asks if I can get them any tighter, and I reply,"sometimes, but Ill take that group anyway with my LB"  So I told him im not as much a static foam puncher.

So I said, now let me put you to a little test.  I got out my cardboard deer cut out I brought with me and put it up..  I then took my 3 arrows and threw them different angles and different yards from 10 to about 33 and proceeded to put all three in the kill zone, (all without stepping off the yards) Bill put his 10 harder and about 21 harder int he kill but shot over the back at 30.  He then told me he does not shoot like that. He has his stands marked with colored tape out to 40 yards so he knows the range when  a deer comes in.  We had a good time shooting. He really liked the Longbow but said it was not for him.

Needless to say I have permission to hunt and he now thinks stick bows can be used to kill something.  We are always being judged folks, so lets keep a good name about us.

Sometimes I wonder how I can pull it off honestly.  I am more confident in hitting the kill zone 9/10 than the bullseye 9/10. I guess it's a mental thing.

Good luck this season. Hope you and him have great  time. That's how I started traditional. I hunted with a buddy who shot a longbow and I used  a compound. That's when I really decided I wanted a traditional bow because I was watching him having so much fun.

Sounds like a wonderful season, and an even better friendship in the making. Nothing beats mutual respect.

Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

And this is the general area ill be at.  There is a major run up above me, but I'm thinking its a late night use run.  Down below is the convergence of 3 major runs leading from feeding to bedding. The Autum olive bush will be my home.

The pic of Bill and my boy, is the trail that is 15 yards below me. The hill your looking at puts me above them farthest shot is 20 yards to the other side of the creek.
