I, along with nine other bowhunters are going to Pike County, Illinois this fall on a semi-guided bowhunt (myself being the only one shooting trad equipment). One of the other hunters called me this evening and asked if I would like to go and shoot the Techno-Hunt "Whitetail Hunt" with him. I agreed that it would be excellent practice and within the hour we were at Archery Haven, where the screen is set up. As we were driving to the pro-shop, my friend was kinda messing with me about bringing a "kid's bow" to Illinois, and that I should go buy a compound since it offers "better accuracy". As we signed in the pro-shop guy asked about my bow, my RER Arroyo, and said that's what he uses to teach kids with....as you can imagine, my friend enjoyed a good laugh at my expense. The "hunt" is from the 20 yard mark, so if sight pins are used, only the 20yd pin is necessary, since I shoot instinctively, it was simple, do what I'm used to doing....pick a spot and concentrate. We were the only archers in the building at the time so the owner sat up the computer for us and explained the scoring system, then asked if we'd mind if he watched, which we agreed to. The end result.... I shot a score of 157 and my wheelie bow friend shot a score of 153, and both he, and the owner were pretty silent about the need for compounds to be able to shoot good, granted, it was only 20 yards, and I'm sure if there would have been ranges of 30-40 yards, I couldn't have out shot the compound. I didn't let it show but I was beeming inside, not that I out shot my partner, but that I shot well enough to be confident for our upcoming trip. More practice will be necessary, and I have been shooting at 30, 40, and 50 yards regularly as I find it greatly increases my accuracy 30 yards and in, which is my self imposed limit. The chronograph feature on the techno-hunt was not working so I wanted to shoot my bow through the regular chronograph just to see how fast it shot. I got this bow about 3 weeks ago, it's a 54" arroyo 51@28 but I only draw 26.5 inches so around 45 or 46 pounds. The total arrow weight was 514 grains, 200 grains up front including the 75gr insert. Average arrow speed over ten shots was 174fps, the the slowed being 170fps, and the fastset being 178fps....not bad for as short draw length and only 45 or 46 pounds I thought. My friend was impressed with the accuracy, and while I thought I shot well, I did realize that I need to get me a 3-d deer to practice on, as the "picking a spot" isn't near as hard on a regular target as it is on a life like deer. All in all, we had a great time and I'll be trying to go shot the techno-hunt weekly if possible to see if my scores improve after I get me a 3-d deer target to practice with.
