Broadhead Wobble

Have you ever had broadheads that no matter what you do, wobble when you spin them?
 I tried for a week to mount some Snuffers that I've had since the 80's on some shafts. I couldn't get any one of them straight. Then I mounted them on a set of shafts that my buddy gave me that had been point tapered on a Woodchuck. Problem solved.
 My old taper tool needs to hit the trash can!

 I was convinced that every one of these Snuffers were warped or something.

I've found that good tapers are critical for point alignment, at least for me, that is why I grind my tapers on a disk sander with a homemade jig.  Not all tapers are the same either, but the jig can be set to match any point's taper.  It really makes a tremendous difference.

Hey Brutus, I have been working on a lower cost option to the woodchuck. Same basic theory, just a little differnt. I wood like to make it so you can take off the disk and mount an abrasive disc for a cutoff saw.

I found a motor, just trying to find the right material to make the disc out of. I have access to a full machine shop (my brothers).

for arrows that will have broadheads I always have someone who has a woodchuck grind the tapers cause thats the only way I can get them to spin true.

Bob, I bet you are right. I've noticed crooked nocks in the past but they don't seem to affect anything that I can see.

The nock is the most important part of your arrow when crooked it starts the arrow in a direction other than straight. Keep in mind there are 360 degrees around the shaft and a nock can be pointing to anyone of them. When several nocks are crooked chances are no two will be the same, meaning each arrow will come out of the bow in a different direction. Think about it, lets say one nock point to 3:Oclock and one to 9:O'clock one arrow will start left and one right. Kind of difficult to shoot consistant with those.

I find the taper is critical too.  I will mess with only quality broadheads.  I did have a couple times with certain companies they wobble no matter what, so glued a screw in adapter on them put them in my drill and guess what the taper on the broadhead was bad not mine.  Be careful!

I made jigs for my sander today.  Amazing.  I took a pretty good spinning broadhead and shaft comb.  removed the BH and re=tapered the shaft.  A very good spinning BH!  Made a beleiver out of me.  Also made a nock taper jig.  Took less than an hour, they are removable from the sander and I put stops on them so they go back on the sanding platen perfectly.

aromakr, you are so right. Not only does the nock have to be straight, it has to be centered. The string should send its stored energy down the center of the arrow shaft, not off to the side.

I bought a tool for checking center/straightness of nocks a few years back: "Tru-Nock", made by Okie Manufacturing, Inc; If I remember correctly, I picked it up at The Footed Shaft, in Rochester, MN... Set the nock in the tool, spin the shaft, and you can see right away if the nock is true.
