Cattle horn use?
« on: September 24, 2012, 06:54:00 PM »
Is there any use for cattle horn in traditional/primitive bowhunting? The reason I ask is that I will have a lot of it in a couple weeks. Some of them are only 12" or so long, one or two might only be 8", but there are 6 or 8 cows that I am going to dehorn that will have 16"-20"+ horns on each side.
I have no use for them, do you?

God Bless,
Nathan

You can make cups and spoons out of them.  If you can plug the big end tight, you can carry tender and your fire starters in one.  Cut the little end off, save the tip and drill a holr thru it then invert it grind down the neck, stick it in the cut off end and have a dog or hunter's bugle.
Used to collect them, years ago, for that kind of stuff.  Getting scarse, horned cattle, that is, in my part of the country.
Have fun with 'em, just think of something, it'll be fun!

Bow tip overlays. Horn nocks for arrows. Arrow shelfs. Use your imagination I'm sure there are a lot more.

Go post this on the bow building forum I bet it won't last long.

I use them for tip overlays on some of the bows I build.  They work great.

I use one for chew spit believe it or not.  Plastic bottles crinkle too much and glass and steel get COLD! So i made a plug of balsa wood that fits snug and wear it like a powder horn over my shoulder while scouting and hunting.

Thanks Tony

What kind of cattle? The longer horns if from the right breeds can be used for horn belly composite bows.

I've seen them used to make horn tip overlays and thumb rings for Asiatic bow shooting. And, of course, powder horns for muzzleloaders.

Well fellas, looks like y'all have some good ideas, but I have no time.  I was intending on giving them away.  4 people have spoken for some.  If you have a desire, then shoot me a PM.

Maybe this should have gone on the give away forum.  If so, please move it.

Nathan

Looks like almost all of them are spoken for. If there are any extras when I chop them off of the cows, I will post again.
