Developing a bad habit
« on: September 25, 2012, 09:16:00 AM »
Could this be the beginning of a bad habit?  Yesterday I received my new2me bow I recently purchased for a great deal on one of those auction sites.  Pictured below, it's the top bow,  Martin x-200, 55# @ 28".  Shot a couple rounds last night and love it!  My "collection" is small compared to some, only 4...with one more in the mail (2 of them are bows I got for my kids)...oh yeah, I've got a couple compounds in the garage I just remembered.  Anyways, thought I'd share.
   :)

One thing I really like about the martin is I can get my bow hand way up on the grip about level with the shelf to get more of a G. Fred Asbell type of grip, heel of palm up off the bow so I'm not torquing the bow. Don't get me wrong, I love my other bow, but the grip is different right below the shelf so I can't get the grip as close to the shelf.

You'll need a bigger bow rack, there is no cure,so just go with it and enjoy.

Whether the habit is good or bad I will leave for you to decide.  However, I will give you my take on becoming a gatherer of bows.  I wish I had just settled on 3-4 well selected bows that do the job for me and stuck with them a long time back.  Presently I have about 20 on the wall and recently sat down and listed all the trad bows I have owned over the years--about 86 that I can remember!         They were all good bows that would have done the job admirably for me but I was always on the look-out for the next one (no, I do not claim that I am "healed" of the affliction yet       :knothead:     ).  Each time I go out to shoot, hunt, etc., I have to choose which one of the group I will take because they all are calling for my attention.  I often wish that I had not saddled myself with so many....really, I do.  Trouble is, I can't bring myself to part with most of them even though I would be better off in the long run.

So, yes, I am a mess!  It is fun, but I could have taken some nice hunts with what I have spent on bows that mostly hang on the wall.  They all get shot regularly, but that is not a good way to really master a bow and let it become second nature to you.  Just a word from an old timer in this game who has more bows than he needs! (I know, many will deny that such a condition can exist     :D     )  Have fun and do what scratches the itch for you.  Life is short at best.

So many bows....so little time.     :archer2:

LOL! you're right Grinch,  I had to take the rack down and redo it last night just to get the 4 bows to fit on there.

On a completely seperate note,  my dad is up in PA where I'll be hunting, and his buddy that has the property we'll be hinting called him and told him to come over quickly.  When he got there there were 16 deer out in one of his field.  They had a 60X zoom camera and took some recording and were blessed to see 2 seperate pair of MONSTER buck fighting!  It's the first time my dad has seen deer battle and said it was quite a site.  he didn't get a point count but said there were several HUGE buck.....I've still got 5 weeks before I get up there. I can barely sit still now!
It's all open property, no fences or anything like that, so they could dissapear before I get there, but he has some great acorn and apple trees so the deer have a good food supply and hopefully will stick around.

Thanks for the advice David, much appreciated.  My recent purchase was mainly bc I only had my custom 65#er and wanted something just a little lighter.  After season is done with I'm actually hoping to try my hand at building bows, maybe that will curb my appetite a little.

Well, doubtful if you're like me, but at least if you're making your own it may not cost as much.   ;)
