Old Felt Hat Refresher
« on: September 28, 2012, 10:39:00 AM »
Have you got an Old Felt Hat thats Water/Sweat Stained, or just Plain Dirty? I learned from an Elderly Lady Neighbor of mine, how to Spruce them back up and take the Stains out!!
Cornmeal!!  Just Plain, Old, Ordinary Cornmeal. Sprinkle it on, Rub It Around for a while and check the change in Yer Hat!! I was amazed!!
We, as a Country, do not treat our Elderly as the Treasures they are! I Love to sit and listen to the Older Folks sit and tell about their Lives.  MUCH  Knowledge can be aquired for treating them for what they are:  TEACHERS  of the Young!!  :archer:

Shakes,

Good tip, and great observation.  Our culture is youth obsessed and the byproduct of that is that our elders are discarded a lot of times.  truth is we are worse of for it.

Do you just rub it on or bury it?

Thanks for sharing this tip!

I just sprinkled it on a small spot, and rubbed it until I either rubbed off all the cornmeal, or knocked it off to see how clean it is.

I could not agree more on taking the time to sit and talk to older Folks, and not just about Handy Tips either. They have a vast wealth of experience and Knowledge and it's a crying shame for it to die with them. Now days so many push past old timers, I say G/Day as I walk past often or sit down next to them while my Wife Shops and the light in their eyes that somebody acknowledged them is great to see.

Good advise! Scary though, when young ones come to you and you realize you have become the elderly.

Your hat tip made my day!
Life's experience tells me this: Usefullness and value do not stop at age 65...
I'm a senior who is still in the workforce, consulting on reverse mortgages. All of my customers are seniors with financial issues of one sort or another.
It's amazing to me how much knowledge and resource our culture is willing to 'put on the shelf' with our older folks.
We are missing the boat by dismissing their value in society.
I'm only as good as my first shot.

Good tip on the hat cleaning.  As I approach the age of 68 I'm not sure which category I belong in.  I do know that I never quit learning as I age, but I have learned a thing or two I can pass on as well - if someone is inclined to listen.
And in the end of our exploring we shall return to the place where we started and know that place for the first time.
