A friend of mine here has and I have heard of biologists getting bulls up close and personal using a head decoy.   It's secon hand info my lil bro passed on the info from a presentation he attended.

Honestly they are typically fairly easy to call during the rut do I don't mess with them.    Where I hunt typically at they are quite educated calling typically sends them running!

I have used a Montanna decoy, but a small black unbrella works better.Easy to carry and setup.

Eldon at Hunters Point uses the Montana decoy with good results for his clients. I know that he has actually pulled bulls off of live cows with one on several occasions.

I just got back from northern Ontario. We called in the biggest bull I have ever seen on the hoof. He hung up at 150 yards. We had some plywood antlers but he didn't buy it. I think if we had a decoy we could have pulled it off. We were calling from some willows and dogwood bushes and I think that the bull figured he should have seen something dark. Oh well there is always next year.  :banghead:

We've used decoys made out of black landscape fabric.  They do work but it's usually hard to get them into a position where the moose can see them due to all the brush in typical moose lhabitat.

Terry,  we used a cut out from a white five gallon bucket, kinda in the shape of antler tines. Although we never employed it, I think it would work fine. Its the affect more than anything and of coarse finding the right bull helps too. I think a small 3' wood canoe paddle would be best as you could use it to rake in the brush and hold high to simulate an antler. By the way I will try and get by your cabin this week and give you the Alaska report.

best call I've heard is a oil can and a stick....shove the stick in the pour end of the can and tape it on or secure however you see fit....cut the bottom off...if its too loud trim the can down and or wrap in duct tape!  super light, and sounds extremely good!  I preferred it loud....my boss not so much! It'll give you goose bumps using it full out raking or just ticking a few branches here and there.

disclaimer not all oil cans sound the same!  I used a pennzoil can and my client at the time took it home with him....kinda left me hanging for client number 2 but we got it done.  The thickness and length of the can will dictate the sound you get!   its a lot better than carrying antlers/paddles or trying to rake with a 20lb stick LOL!

Preston white game bags work well for palms calling at a distance, if you can manage to hold them up.
