I think they bark at their shadows sometimes. Chipmunks bark to hear themselves.

Yes. They will bark at most things moving or sitting in the woods.

When a squirrel suddenly gives alarm barks I always pay attention. I've seen it more with bucks than does.

They bark and scatter when Hawks fly close by and anything that ain't normally supposed to be there...Sometimes when they are munching all day and I want them to leave an area I just do a squeech or call like a hawk or eagle and watch them scatter like crack dealers in the streets...Only problem is sometimes it will backfire on you and they all will start barking then

You'll notice that squirrels have different sounds for different critters. They will bark at a deer, but I think it's more of a gossipy type bark. Other squirrels in the area don't panic when they hear it. When a hawk/owl/bobcat/etc comes through, they use a very excited, shrill bark that all the others for hundreds of yards around echo and relay almost instantly as they scamper up into the limbs. But in short, yes. They will bark at deer. And nearly everything else.

Oh yes they bark alright!
For me, telling the deer that I'm there~!
Heck, I even had crows give me away to oncoming deer.......Not joking either.

Let me tell you their bite is much worse than their bark! Don't try to get your arrow back until they are dead! Let's just say that I know a guy who made that mistake!
