Hello, and a question on riser centercut & spine
« on: October 26, 2012, 03:12:00 PM »
Long time lurker, first time posting. Really lucky to have such an incredible resource here at TradGang. I've learned a lot and it's great to be able to read about so many people's experiences. I grew up hunting with rifle and shotgun, got out of it for a while (reasons unknown) and then "discovered" archery. Yeah, I'm hooked, this makes sense, this is what I was bred to do. My ancestors didn't make it this far just for me to eat prepackaged meat from a grocery store.

Anyways, I am setting up a new bow, and I've found a couple of arrow configurations that bareshaft well. I have a good baseline to work with. For example, fletched and bareshaft 2117s (31 5/8 BOP) are stacking together with 200 grain field points and a crappy b50 endless string.

When I switch to a FastFlight+ flemish string, the arrows are shooting weak. That makes sense to me, the FF string should be more efficient at delivering power and require a slightly stiffer arrow.

I don't want to cut the arrows any shorter as I have a 30" draw. I also like these 200 grain points that I have. So, I should be able to build out the rest a little bit to compensate, right? I want to stiffen up the arrow just a bit.

What I do not understand is... what is the ideal alignment of an arrow, when you consider centercut and sideplate width? Many of the tuning guides say to put the tip of the arrow just to the outside of the string. But what about a self bow for example, where the arrow is waaaay to the outside?

Is it just a matter of efficiency? Is less paradox better, since less energy would go into flexing the arrow? If I build up the side of my rest another sixteenth or eighth of an inch, will it have any noticeable affect?

Each 1/16 is about the equivalent of 5#. Less paradox is better but I don't know the answer to your 'ideal alignment' question. You can play with your brace height as well to accommodate the FF type string a few more twists will have an effect.
