Here's a good way to know if you are packing either too much or too little before you go into the actual wilderness: 1). Make out a list of everything that you think that you want to take.  2). Pack it all into your backpack and carry it fully loaded, up & down your local football bleachers for a couple of hours.  3). Then unpack it and make camp in your yard for the night.  Sounds crazy, but this does teach you about the amount of weight that you can handle going in, your fitness beforehand and it is all in a safe and convenient spot.  This is called practice and believe me, you can never do too much practice beforehand.  Remember, with a little luck and skill you will come out with a heavier pack than you went in with.

A word of caution about GPS units:  a GPS is excellent except when the batteries die or you can't get a signal.  Believe me it happens a lot!  Learn how to use both a map and compass effectively beforehand and bring them.

Talk to a nurse or doctor as to what you should take for first-aid supplies based on the hunt you are planning and your own health concerns. There are a lot of survival materials available.  Read as much as you can.  This will help you to prepare your list as well.

Pack some spare items: Batteries, Compass, Knife, Matches, etc.

Lastly, prepare a hunt plan, give it to someone you trust beforehand and you must stick to it!  It's easy and tempting to deviate from your plan and area while chasing wild game, but what happens if you get hurt or lost and someone needs to find you?

Cameron Hayes has a great book on back-country hunting that you might want to read on this.

That's a question with lots of variables... What kind of weather, terrain, and how remote?  Will this be overnights in established campsites or backwoods? Lots of things change when your truck camping or backpacking. And yes you are absolutly right about unnecessary equipment. Whatever your plans: good boots and socks, two blades (at least one fixed), 2 bic lighters, 1 firesteel, 100' of cordage, duct tape (not the whole role wrap it around something like a hiking pole), tin cup or canteen, rain gear, roll of gauze, hand full of ibuprofen and benadryl, and the wisdom to use all of the above.  Assuming you dress correctly the above will keep you alive for a long time. Everything else is luxury...  This is the basic an by  all means not all I carry but it goes everywhere with me. To work or a 5 day backpacking trip I'm never very far from this basic list.

You can get a light setup for 3-4 day no problem... My lightweight bivy setup for 3-4 days was 35lb and I took more then I felt I needed. To keep everything light it cost a bit more money but is worth it if you do it much

I'm assuming your doing this first season in oregon?
Skip the tent get a bivy sack and supper light 30 deg down bag. If you get cold get a 15deg bag and you will be fine.

What are you planning to hunt in what kind of country at what elevation at what time of year? It is hard to suggest anything without any information.
