big shot glove questions
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:55:00 PM »
So, i'm looking to try a glove for the first time. I've only used calf hair tabs which i love but they wear out WAY too fast and the cost adds up. So here's my questions: 1) how long do the big shot gloves last and are they worth the money? 2) is the buffalo hide worth the extra money and 3) how clean of a release do you guys get? I shoot three under and i dont expect that to be a problem but I love the super clean release feeling you get from calf hair, would i get this from the big shot gloves?
Thanks again gang you guys are great.

Kamm..Like you I shoot three under and thought about the $ But I now have two of them. I bought the buffalo about two years ago and it's still doing fine, so this past summer I bought another one (elk) just to have a back up. I couldn't tell a big differents between the two but time may show something. But I like them.

thanks BBWV, I think the tips over the fingers on those big shots are neat. I'm just not sure how smooth the release is

The big shot took a little getting used to.  The material felt a little bulky at first.  I stuck with it and after a few days I loved the glove.  I have a couple elk hide gloves. The oldest is at least five years old and is holding up great.

Tab man for years!! Would periodically try a glove, since I felt a genuine need, yet repetatively came away quite disappointed.

My 7th glove happened to be the Big Shot. Broke it in then immediatley procured another identical Big Shot. My tabs now have found themselves locked away. The quest for the right glove for me was gratefully adjourned over a year ago.

The buffalo is DEFINITELY worth the extra. I used to get through an Elk glove every 18 months to 2 years. I switched to a buffalo 3 years ago & it still loks & fits like new.
The elk hide is a lot stretchier & once stretched, that's the size it stays. Eventually it will feel loose. The buffalo also stretches, but once you take it off, it shrinks back down to close to original size. it always, always fits tight to my fingers.

Oh and make sure when you receive your glove, it wants to be way too tight to start with. I mean you almost shouldn't be able to put it on. If it fits when you get it, it'll be way too big in 3 months.

Very good glove.  I have the elk skin glove and although I have had to replace the wrist strap a couple of times, it is the most durable glove I have used.

How is the sizing on them? My damascus gloves are mediums and my berlin gloves are larges. I'd like to try a bigshot glove but I'm just not sure which size to order? Thanks, Brad.

Brad, I think they run a little small.  I think I would go with the large.  I shot an x-large bateman glove and thanks to a dealer who lets me try them on, I tried several bigshots before finding an x-large big enough. Like others have said, you want them to fit very tight to start with.

I have a Big Shot, and although it is very nice, it just doesn't work best FOR ME. There are so many individual preferences in this sport, and the fact that I prefer other gloves (and tabs) doesn't detract from the way the Big Shot works for others. As with bows, quivers, arrows, broadheads, etc., try as many different ones as you can and buy what works best for you. I wear size large in pretty much every glove I have tried, including the Big Shot. If in doubt, I would tend to go with the smaller size, because the finger stalls tend to pull away from my fingers on the Big Shot, so you want them to start out pretty tight, as Gordon has said. I find the thickness of the finger stalls to be a problem, and shooting fairly heavy bows with thinner stalls doesn't seem to hurt me, so I choose the lack of bulk.

For the sizing of the Big Shot you can send a trace of your hand either by fax or mail to American Leathers and will send you the size you need. I wasn't sure when I ordered mine so I sent mine in and they sent me the size I needed. I even called and talked to them on the phone, they are very nice and helpful. Might as well order from the company who makes them.

Bryce, I love mine so much I have three big shots and one full shot glove.
they are THE best gloves I have ever used, especially since I have sensitive fingers, they don't get sore even after a 3d shoot or a day of stumping.
Quality and Durability are excellent.
The buffalo hide is thicker, but I don't see much difference.
Just get one that fits nice and snug and it will stretch out to perfectly fit your fingers.

Love them have both and cant tell much difference.  the first day as someone else mentioned was a little bulky but after it broke in just a little I was shooting great.  I think they are a great glove.

I've been wearing a medium in my Damascus... loved it at first, and lately started noticing the release seemed a little sloppy, and my middle finger was going a little numb. After lots of reading here, and talking to John at American Leathers, I decided to try a Full Shot. Takes a little getting used to (still only have shot with it maybe half a dozen times or so) but I am REALLY happy with the glove.
Back to the question: John sent me a medium and a large so I could try both (after faxing him a tracing of my hand). Both felt really tight out of the bag, so I went with the large. It's already breaking in nicely, especially after a good application of Pitch Blend.
So, from a medium Damascus, probably a large Big Shot.
