ILF Take Down metal or wood, Which is the best & why?

Not sure you could say one is better than the other, however almost all metal risers have one, sometimes two plunger holes for shooting off elevated rests whereas most (but not all) wood risers do not.  You can also change grip types on metal risers but not on wood.

I had a chat with Bob Morrison not too long ago. He has some definite things to say that will provoke thought. Now here's a guy who can make and shoot anything he wants and this year he is hunting with a 52" ILF bow with his new MAX I limbs on a metal riser, shooting off the shelf with a plunger.  I'm suggesting you give him a call.

Just so you know, I've preferred metal risers since the 60's, so I'm definitely biased.

Ray....no wood grip on your bow. I have a Jaeger grip on mine and my wife has a dymonwood grip on hers. We are up north, like you,  and hunt right thru the middle of Dec. with no problems.

I am shooting an all Phenolic Morrison and an Alumunum Titan and I love them both

I shoot metal risers more than anything. But when it gets cold I wont hunt with it. I have a wood grip too, and have wrapped that thing in moleskin trying to keep that cold metal from sucking the heat out of my hands. But I lost the battle.
I understand some of you guys can handle it, I cant.
I just quit trying and now happily shoot my custom wood bows when it drops under 32

I have both.......I really prefer the look and feel of wood. But I'm setting up a 17" metal Morrison  with longbow limbs for hunting....just to try it out. I most times where a glove on my bow hand so cold is not to much of an issue. The ability to shoot with a plunger or elevated rest or of the shelf let you be creative in your set up....and that's good. I will say that I do love my all wood Zipper!

You can't beat metal for strength, stability and adjust-ability, The Gen 3 mini I'm shooting has added 3.5 oz.lead in lower part of the riser for more stability. So far mid 30 degree hunting and have not had a problem at all with it being too cold, I don't hold the bow 100% of the time once on stand and do spend too much time walking around before taking a stand so I do hold it plenty. I do have a Jager grip of plastic and rubber. And have already being contemplating making a grip of Styrofoam if it gets to be a problem, not something I'm planning on producing but anyone with a pocket knife should be able to make one. I still love pretty woods in a bow and will continue to hunt with both. But if  I was only to have one riser and never to have a choice it would be metal, It will last a like time with no exceptions, other than if your wife decides to throw it in the fire along with the rest of your hunting gear...

I'm looking into an ILF set-up also...I'm leaning towards a metal riser. The main reason is the adjustability.  As others have suggested the grips could be changed, a small stabilizer could be added or a removable quiver could be used.

I have several bows but not one that can be used as a bow fishing set-up...the metal could be used for that also. Granted wooden risers can also have all the hardware installed to allow for all of this also.

 I think the riser might last through that too!
