calling techniques for mulies

does anybody out there use any calls or calling techniques for mule deer.
grunt tubes, doe in a can, rattles?
and when and how are you doing it?

Good question...I have wondered about this myself.

I have always hunted mulies during Aug and Sept but am starting to hunt them more later in the year and would like to try some of these tatics if they work...

I have used a can call to stop and hold mildly spooked bucks......also to cover my own noise if the snow is crunchy........make the deer think I am another deer and not the dangerous predator that I am   :rolleyes:

I've used a fawn in distress before. Often they come charging in but occasionally they go the other way.
I've never had any luck grunting or rattling but I only hunt them during the rut every four years or so. Quincidentally this is the year, I'll be back into them on Wednesday and I'll try grunting.

I have seen a video of a guy using a fawn in distress call during the rut. It can draw in the does who come in to protect the fawn...the buck followed the does.  But during the regular season I think spot and stalk is the best way to get close enough for a shot on a muley buck.

I use a mouth blown call called E.L.K. it has a plastic body folded over, that you bite down on just a bit & a rubber band stretched through the opening. One end is called Deer Talk, the other end is Deer Stopper. The Deer talk sounds like a bleat & the deer stopper sounds almost like a cottentail call. It mimics a fawn in distress & will bring does & when they arrive they are mad. It will also usually stop a deer running away for a brief moment. I use it both during Archery & gun season. They are made in Gardner Montana.

I use an estrous bleat call when Im out in Nebraska and it works like a charm.  But I have only hunted during the rut and not early season.

Yeah, they don't really "call" like their whitetail cousins.  

It's going on right now in my part of Montana, I've seen a few dink bucks.  This weekend should be heavy with humpin and butt sniffin, and there's pretty much just one thing on a bucks mind.

Never had any luck rattling mulies either.  I know one old timer that says it works sometimes.

Elk hunting in Colorado this year, I grabbed a stick and started busting on a dead limb.  No elk came in but a nice mulie buck did.  In fact he stayed for a while.  I had'nt seen any decent bucks in the area prior to then.  If I had a license, he was in range.  This was in late September when a lot of antler rubbing was going on.
