Beginner arrows?
« on: December 05, 2012, 08:21:00 PM »
I put this along with another post about string problems but the arrow question didn't get much attention, so let me start a separate topic.

I'm slowly acquiring the things I need to start shooting. I need a stringer, tab or glove (thinking a tab) and lastly arrows...

I really want to shoot wood arrows to start with, my problem is by the time I add up stringer, tab, wood arrows, then all the services of getting the arrows cut, tapered, and glued... I'm looking at roughly $80.

Thats kind of steep for me right now, and only because thats for arrows that I'm not even sure will shoot right yet, so I was going to get the test kit but it still ends up pretty pricey.

My question is, can anyone recommend maybe another company or solution? Or... is this just a case of "too bad, too sad" lol... and just take the blow?

I really want to start shooting, but after bow and strings, My budget is beginning to grow more then what I anticipated. Any pointers would be great, Thanks!

Maybe just buy 6 arrows to start out with.  May save some $$'s and get you started.  It will also give you an idea if they are spined right before committing to a full dozen.  Not a big deal.  I always take out the same 3-4 arrows everyday and shoot them.  The rest of the dozen just sit in the house.

Thats what I was thinking as well, Just really would hate to buy the wrong ones, even at half a dozen their still pretty pricey. Oh well, I'm thinking I'm just going to keep my eye out for some used ones somewheres...  :knothead:

thanks

Have you considered woodgrain finish carbon or aluminium's?

wood arrows are quite easy to break. I find carbon the toughest.

I would start out with aluminum  More durable than wood and cheaper than carbon. If barebow doesn't have your size, let me know I may. No charge, it's CHRISTMAS time and would be glad to help.

I also have a few tabs and armguards if you need one.

Jon, I've debated going to carbon over wood. I just have had bad thoughts on alum. I'd rather save up or wait for a decent deal on wood or carbon. I appreciate your generosity on the tabs and armguard, I have some scratch leather laying around I'm going to use for a arm guard, I should also be able to pick up a tab off the big auction site or the classifieds. THANK YOU very much though! Its awesome knowing people are there to help you out!

This is my first recurve so I'm not too sure on glove size, I'm about 6'0 and 175# if that helps any?? lol. Stringer would be super helpful, I tried making one with scrap leather and it slides on the limbs... and arrows not sure either, that’s what I'm in the middle of deciding. I'm trying to get time off to go back home for the holidays. If I can, I'm going to stop by the old local archery shop I use to visit in the compound days... They may have some used arrows I can get cheaper then some new ones...

Thanks for the offer!

I thought the same thing about woods breaking too easily but, A older thread I started a lot of people were saying its not that big of a difference     Idk... I just would like to try them out. Never considered the wood grain finish, I'll defiantly look into that, thank you!

Hey Mac, I didn't get anything from you sorry.

Thank you all for the replies, hopefully I can pick some stuff up here and there before too much longer and start shooting. I've been drawing the bow back probably, roughly 20 times a day practicing form and thinking the motions through.

yes sir, I was 28" on a compound with a back tension release. this bow I got now is 45#@28".

I drew it back with one of my older compound arrows(28.5") and the back of the point came almost to the belly side of the shelf. So I'm assuming I need 29" arrows, and my DL is still 28" with the recurve. Could be wrong, but I've been drawing it back and it feels good.

I have some 35/55 carbon shafts that should work. They are 29.5 inches I think. Probably 6.
I'd fletch them up if interested send me a PM with your address
Carbons last a lot longer than woodies for just starting out .

I don't have any woodies that would work for you.  Would send some if I had them.  Looks like you have lots of other offers though.

Macbow, I greatly appreciate bud but as you and others have stated... I can't beleive how many people have stepped up to offer help, That is so cool!!! after going through emails and PMs I should be perfectly set for now to start shooting. Got a stringer, a glove to try, a couple tabs, and arrows!!! I feel so blessed right now! Cant say thanks enough guys! I will indeed keep all of you in mind during my journey of shooting and hope/can't wait to meet some of you! by far this IS the BEST archery forum ever, I've never had this much thought and help from strangers, I feel bad for accepting the help for I'm a "independent" kind of person, but I will most definatly do the same and pass on all the knowledge and help I receive to the next person in line!

Hermon, as stated I should be well off buddy, thank you for your thoughts!

Barebow, got it, PMed back.

Jake most of the people on here are a great group and Like Mac said...just paying it forward...they all sure helped me out when i started.

Just look at all of the post offering to send you stuff!...the world really isnt as bad as ya think sometimes!

I would also recommend trying the 3555 and foot them with aluminum...that way you will get a really really tough arrow. Starting with woods will add up quick because you will break so many in the begining. Here is a good thread about how to foot them....  http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=110893

BigJim a sponcer on here has blemished shafts and at $45 a dz it is a great price! The other thing that will help is to get a really cheap feather chopper and some full length feathers...buying precut can get costly! A basic fletcher is around $20 and duco glue is cheap and easy to use!

Spray paint the back haft of those shafts something bright so it makes it a little easier to find them.

Start off simple and worry about fancy arrows later on when you get better!!!

If you need a arm guard i will be happy to send you one and i have a split finger caviler tab i will give ya.

Good luck and hope ya have a great time!!!

Lance, you are very right my friend. An amazing group here on trad talk! I beleive I'll be more then ok to start, for whatever reason I find myself needing something else I'll take your offer. I'll look into the fletcher, I use to do my own carbons for my compound. Thanks again!
