want to shoot different points/problem of spine
« on: December 12, 2012, 08:49:00 AM »
I am just learning about trad Archery and am having a problem. Out of my HHbow 60#@26 I shoot 50-55 spine i bought a test kit of points and the 135 gr. points shoot fine when I paper tuned them. I really like the Judo stump shooting points but they only come in 135 Grain. The problem is that I want to shoot my 160 Gr.Howard Hill broadhead. Should I try to shoot two different spine arrows or will that mess with my shooting? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I don't quite understand how you paper tuned with judo points. That said, if the judo points have room at the front and my experience is that most field points and broadheads do, take some lead wire or heavy solder wire and cut off 15 or 20 grains, shape it a bit with pliers and with a flat punch or small machine bolt, use a hammer to lightly tap it firmly in the front of the point. Do this with the tip of the point on a block of wood, this will put you within 5-10 grains of the HH broadhead which is more than close enough.

Chief,

I'd suggest that, if as you say you are "just learning about trad archery,"  to just shoot your arrows!  If you are getting good flight out of the 135 grain points ( field or judos), at this point do not stress over spine.  Put the HH broad heads on your current shafts and shoot them -- you might be surprised!

Again, if you are just getting started, you might have the cart before the horse.  It is VERY difficult for most to shoot a 60# bow to start with and learning on one is a REAL challenge!!  Paper tuning is problematic for trad shooters to begin with (most often totally unreliable).  Your form and shot execution will have a much larger impact on arrow flight at this point than any amount of tuning will help.

You will find as you get more accustomed to shooting trad, that your spine requirements will probably change as your shot execution improves; so at this point just shoot what you have and don't worry about spine.  You can and will get to a point where you are shooting good (better) groups, that will be the time to refine your tuning ( spine, etc.).

X3 moebow. At this point just shoot and have fun and don't sweat the small stuff. That sweating will come soon enough.

I agree with moebow, when I replied I had not noticed the 60# mentioned in the original post, it would have raised the same red flag.

Great post moebow. I started back in the day with a 65lb longbow and have regretted it for 30 years. I was drastically over bowed caused all kinds of shooting flaws. I wish I had started with 40lbs. That said I finally became decent shot. Just have fun until the groups come together and work on that form. Watch moebows videos on utube.
