What muscles are involved in drawing the bow if you are using perfect form?Where should you be "feeling the burn" so to speak if you've been doing it properly?
I've been using terry and others alignment tips and it seems I am using different muscles than the way I was shooting.BTW my shooting and grouping has greatly improved, thanks all.

Asbell had an article on this recently, in TBM. Basically, the arm is merely a lever, with the back doing the work. If I feel a "burn," I know I'm overbowed. dave

I saw a article in a bow hunting mag last year saying that there are 13 muscles that are used in the shoulder alone...my doc gave me the mag cuz he knew i live to hunt. That was while i was going through my second shoulder surgery. I had to crank my compound down over 10# cuz my shoulder just couldnt take it.

There are several muscles used in this procedure, but the main muscle used in drawing a bow by far is the trapezius muscle(traps) extending from the top of the shoulder all the way to the spine mid way down the back near the shoulder blade.  Others include various small deltoid muscles, lats, forearms, triceps and biceps.  Basically, if you can get an overall upper body workout you will work the muscles used in drawing a bow.  I remember reading an article about working out your archery muscles with a bow in Instinctive Archery magazine in the sample issue if you click on the classifieds.  Good info in there.  Cheers, Matt

Your primary are the traps, rear deltoids, and rhomboids (these are also known as your lower traps but non the less a different muscle)Your forearm is used to hold the string (whether your concious of it or not its still there and is the reason for grip strength) and your bicep/tricep is also used in the initiation of the pull but your back and shoulder muscles do the bulk of the work.

Now thats going just for the pulling to hold the bow out and move it around you use alot of pectorials and deltoid (anterior and medial) to hold and move the bow around.
