So, do I win?
« on: December 28, 2012, 03:20:00 PM »
LOL

I put off surgery for over a year, but it had to be done last week. I had a 50% tear in the rotator cuff, 2 tears on each side of the "lining" of the "socket cup", 2 bone spurs removed, a cyst removed and my bicep muscle put back into "it's groove" (laymen speak).

Believe it or not, there's little pain. Lots of soreness and bruising, but almost no pain. I'm a week out and haven't taken any pain pills, not even advil, since I took one yesterday morning.

I've been PT 3 times and the physical therapist said I'm in "fantastic shape" and they usually look for 110 degrees range of motion 2-3 weeks out and I had 150 degrees of motion 5 days out.

The PT said I should be close to 90% by late March and better than ever, bow wise, by May.

Yeah, that's the aircast ice pack. I'm following every instruction to a T.

The Dr. said ice it down as often as possible and do my little, uber light 3 minute rehab exercise routine every 2 hours or so. For fun, I use a cedar arrow that True North Arrows made for me for my "hold the broom stick out in front, go side to side" exercise. LOL

Did Ibow have surgery too? He was the person most helpful for initially getting me into traditional archery gear.
I was a compound shooter who wanted to get into traditional bows, but was utterly clueless on where to begin or even look. I didn't even know how to string a trad bow. Ibow got me headed in the right direction.

Yeah...Ibow (Chuck) is going through the very same thing right now.  You guys should be hanging out watching hunting vids, one armed fletching arrows, or walking around scouting!

Bob – Just had a buddy email me about this thread and I’ve also been “whining” to Ryan about all the ups and downs of rotator surgery.    :)

That is just plain crazy. You could have photo shopped my pict into yours and it would have worked. I used the same type of ice pack. Hilarious.

I went to Alberta this spring and was just able to squeeze that one in. By the time I got home I was finished. I laid off the bow for a few weeks after getting home and by the time I picked it back up at the end of June, it was over. I couldn't get even halfway drawn back. It was really starting to effect me at work as well. Had it done 12-12-12.    :p

Sounds like we had a similar surgery ... I had 3 tears repaired and bone spurs shaved down. Same thing done with the bicep muscle.

I started PT last week and going good. Pain was awful the first couple of days but now is not bad at all. I also stopped the pain pills after just a few days - didn’t care for that at all. Ice worked just as well the first few days.

I don’t know about you but I’m really anxious to get back to work. I am hoping to go back a week from Monday on very limited duty (won’t be doing any climbing or work with switch sticks for a while) but I think they’ll find something for me to do. It will all depend upon if my MD signs a “release”.

Very best wishes for a full recovery for you Bob. Hope you had a good Christmas. You’re way too kind but I sure hope the little bit I contributed to your love for trad archery way back then didn’t contribute to THIS.    :D

If anything, I have lots of time to "shop" online. I've got about a grand worth of new stuff laid out in my head. LOL. Arrows and quivers and bows, oh my. I'm going to post a bunch of stuff for sale or trade to pay for it.

BTW, when I put on the ice pack, I feel like this guy and that I'm going to take over the galaxy...

I too managed to squeeze in a few bow sits this deer season. But I had to pain pill up to even draw in the low 30's.

Given my property has always been in farmland with ample tags (crop damage and antlerless), this is the first bow season since 1978 that I didn't kill at least a fawn with a bow. The streak is over.

My pre-surgery shoulder even impacted rifle season. I couldn't take any recoil at all. I could only shoot my low recoil .250 Savage. Luckily, I killed a really nice buck for the area with it on rifle opener.

I'm 9 weeks post op. Feeling great, you'll do fine.
I think we archers are a "bit" more motivated to get back to 100%.

I agree about the motivation. The PT said lots of people don't follow the instructions.
I can say with certainty that I'm going to strictly follow the instructions.

Absolutely. Most patients do their stretching and work only at therapy sessions. Do yours religiously at home as instructed.. You'll start stretching with a cane, but of course I changed that to using a longbow and recurve.

Bob,

Glad to hear you are doing so well.  Did not know you had got so bad, but had noticed your bow weights were getting lower.

Does this mean you will be rebuilding your bow collection in my weight range again?   :D

LOL.   :D

Yeah, the weights dropped from 55 to 25.   ;)

As far as rebuilding weight, no, I'm sticking with the high 30's-45 from here on out.
