Im confused, carbon guys help me!!
« on: December 31, 2012, 02:34:00 PM »
Ok I was outback shooting some squirrel arrows I made last night. Carbons full length with 5" x 3/4" fletch,3 are 55/75 and 1 is 65/80 and two are Radial X weaves 300's all had 125grn tips. my bow is a Hill Tembo 62# @ 28 and I pull 30-30.5. I normally shoot wood so Im confused.

The carbon arrows above flew like rockets and are dead on. So If I wanted to get into the carbon set up what would be the ticket.I have 2 dozen of the 55/75 arrows I bought on sale, so how do I make it work.

Tuning! I paper tune. You can "adjust" the arrow by changing the length and by adding or talking away front end weight.

I would bet that the 55/75's will show a bit weak and you probably won't be able to use a lot of front end weight (that would just make it weaker).

If you like a heavier arrow (10gpp or higher) you will probably have to go with one of the stiffer shafts and add the weight up front.

Would the 300's work with around 160grn up front at full length?

55/75 should be what works for your bow. If it was a 60# recurve I'd say go with the 300's with a bunch of weight up front. Do some bareshaft tuning, best tuning method I've done. I don't even shoot through paper anymore.

Sounds like you already figured it out. You say"the carbon arrows above flew like rockets and are dead on" You stated 3 of them are 55/75 full length with 5"x3/4" fletch with 125 grn tips. If they are already working you know what you need to do with the 55/75 shafts you purchased.JMHO

Danny all my heads are glue on and the lightest is around 135gr and I have some aluminum adapters, do you think the added weight will make a difference. I dont want to dump any $ into the project and get all crazy.Just want to see if I can make do with what I have.

Watch that arrow weight. Those are not very heavy arrows coming off a bow at about 67-70#. I bet they are rockets.

Start with your 55-75 at full length and add a 100 gr. insert and a 200 gr. tip. That should get you close to 9 gpp. If it shows weak cut it down to your draw which wont be much. Best wishes.

Well I tried the arrows out today and it does seam odd with all the weight up front. But they flew pretty good had a slight left kick out of the gate, and they didnt go as fast as they did with 125grn heads on them.

Is left kick on a bareshaft?  Left kick for right hand shooter is showing weak.  Cut off a 1/4" at a time until it is perfect, OR you can reduce the wt. on the front.

You don't need all that weight, so before cutting, try taking some weight off the front, it's just old school brother, your hunting whitetails not Rhino's, and 5575's should fit the bill.

Happy New Year.

P.S. Get some Loctite Blackmax for the inserts, and you won't need the footings.

I would look at O.L. Adcock's method of tuning.  http://bowmaker.net/tuning.htm  An arrow you might consider using is the Arrow Dynamics Hammerheads.
