What to hunt in AZ next month?
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:37:00 AM »
Hey guys,

I am a CA resident and I might be going to Arizona next month. What can I or should I hunt?

I'm looking for over the counter tags, public land, DIY hunts, nothing too fancy or expensive ideally. Anything fun to keep me busy while I'm there.

Any experiences or recommendations from out-of-staters hunting in AZ would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

AZ has coyotes out the wazooo!

Just been researching on the AZ fish and game website. Looks like deer will be closed. Javelina, chukar, quail, predators, and rabbits will be open.

Javelina sound fun, I've never hunted coyotes before but I like their fur...

Most AZ Javelina are draw tags.

The game and fish dept has some leftover tags that can be purchased over the counter. They may have sold most of them by now. They had so many left over that they allowed hunters who already received a tag to purchase a second tag as long as it was during another time than the first tag. I don't ever remember them doing this before. Lot of guys including myself bought a second tag. Call them and see what tags remain. I am referring to javelina tags.

Except for archery deer, you have to draw for just about every other animal and good luck trying to hunt desert mulies with traditional gear. After five years, I gave up and moved back east. Az was just not what I thought it would be. Between the blistering heat and illegals roaming the desert, I decided it just wasn't for me!

The other day there were some tags leftover for some javelina HAM hunts Feb 8-Feb 17th and some general javelina hunts for Feb 22-28. You could still use your bow for either hunt. You may want to refer to the az game and fish website for leftover tags.

Thanks guys. I'm still in the process of reading through the Fish and Game regulations and trying to "decode" the info. If I can't get one of those leftover javelina tags it looks like coyotes might be all that is left over...
