Cresting Arrows

I am just getting into making my arrows.  I want to start cresting useing paint.  My question is after painting do you have to seal your arrows with a poly or is it just for a look?

If you want it to last, the best thing to do is apply some type of clear coat overtop of it. Do a search on here to find out what paints work with what finishes.  I use Testors paint (model car paint) and a water based clear coat.  Some guys have awesome success with sharpie markers, and others like waterbased paints.  Good luck, and post up some pictures when your done.

X2 what Mike said I have used water based floor poly(in a dip tube) and minwax wipe on poly.The key is what works with what paint. And dry time is also very important on both the cresting and the poly part.

I use testor paints from the hobby store, seems to work better than any archery stuff.It seems tobe the hardest and goes on better.Also i do not clear coat after.I do not think there is much you can put over your cresting that will stop a smug when hit by an arrow.It also adds weight,about 20 grains.Try both ways see what YOU like.

I use all Bohning paints, and have never used anything to seal them. A certain amount of wear and tear is unavoidable.

If you don't seal the paint will get a little sticky in hot weather.

Sealing will make the cresting job hold up better.

I use testors for cresting (so many color options and goes on great). Let it dry 24 hours and then dip the crown and crest in water based poly a couple times before fletching.

You should give snake skins a try.  Be cerative and most importantly, have fun.
