Last summer I bought some GT Blems from Big Jim. The whole ideas is getting the same arrow parameters as I have for my heavier bows. With my heavier bows I shoot woodies, giving me 9 GPP and a 9% FOC. I can’t reach that with my 45 lbs Peregrine.

So I calculated and calculated and decided that GT Traditionals 15-35 might do the job. I was lucky to could order the Blems from Big Jim.

Furthermore I had some contact with Magnus, Matt is a sponsor here. I decided for a 5 inch shielded fletching. His feathers are really a piece of art!

9 GPP @45 lbs means a total arrow weight around the 405 grains. A GT Traditional 15-35 with standard nock and insert installed, weighs around the 265 grains. So I had to add 140 grains, take care of a 9% FOC and taking care of the right dynamic spine.

I started with sanding the GT logo away. Then I started with the cresting, total length of 9 inches. First two layers of multi-primer and then two layers of normal white satin enamel paint. Sanding with 0000 steelwool in between.

I mixed some brown and black paint, to match the color of the striping of Magnus wild turkey feathers, gave it my famous fading effect and some golden stripes.

This just added 10grains..

I installed fieldtips of 100 grains and gave the nock a total weight of 30 grains. I did so by gluing lead (fishing)grains in the hollow GT nock with construction glue, which nicely expands and holds the grains bomb-proof. Easy and cheap!

Result: 407 grains arrow weight, a FOC of 9% and the dynamic spine just about right.

Today was the great day: testing them. Due to my illness, I haven’t shot since September, so I didn’t expect much. But after a few shots I was shooting like I’d never been away…. I aimed at a small piece of paper from 3x3 inches and after a few arrows I started to hit it at 15 yards.

Just as I thought: let’s shoot just one arrow each time, because my arrows are grouping dangerously close; this happened:

Darned, too late!I hate it when that happens with a brandnew arrow!

What more is there to say? The don’t only look terrific, but shoot even better! Scary fast out of my Peregrine, scary groups and hitting where I am looking at. Mission accomplished I would say.

Got to say they looks fantastic! Just a few days ago I tried making my own barred feathers from white 4" gateways and a marker. They look like crap next to yours. :p

Good job with the fadeout in the cresting! That is pretty unique, I thought that it was a cap wrap pattern at first!

Nice looking arrows! I did the same thing the first time I shot my newly capped and crested gold tip blems. I normally shoot one arrow then pull, but I wanted to see how they all flew. Blew the feather right off one of them. Disappointing, but that's why I like carbons. They are so consistent they improve my shooting. Mike

Those look great! I like how you did the caps, very sharp. Only wish I had the problem of grouping mine that close, haha!

Those aren't wraps, I gave them a hand-made cresting... The visibility is less then with a white shaft and two white feathers, but still clear enough.

Nice arrows!

I'm also a fan of natural barred turkey feathers. For me they last a longer and resist moisture better than the usual white or dyed fletching. Tougher to see in flight though than the three white feathers I have on some arrows.

Care to share your secret technique for the fade...?... :D
