A Thousand Campfires
« on: January 31, 2013, 06:08:00 PM »
Back in '84 or '85 I bought a copy of Jay Massey's book "A Thousand Campfires" from him at a North American Longbow Safari. I just started re-reading it and it's like reading his fascinating hunting stories for the first time. I find I'm really enjoying it. Has anyone else here read it lately?

Might have to pull out my copy and give it another read, along with Hunting Alaska's Wild Rivers.  Did the Moose John hunt with Jay back in '91.  Jay was just one all around good guy.  I'm honored to have met him.

I read Ron LaClairs copy one morning in the woods, all in one sitting. I finished and it was exactly 12:00 noon. I laid the book down, looked up, and there was a fat doe standing broadside in front of me. I put an arrow through her ribs, and she went about 30 yards. One of my most memorable deer because of Jay Massey. I wish I had met him.

I know I read it first when I bought it. But the re-read has rekindled some of my favorite memories. Great book to say the least.

I received Bowhunting Alaska's Wild Rivers for Christmas. That's a great read, too.  I think I'll read A Thousand Campfires again after I finish Jay Campbell's book.

It is always a good read,  but it always leaves a lump in my  throat, it's hard to loose a friend.
