Can't sleep
« on: February 12, 2013, 01:05:00 AM »
I've decided at my last 3D shoot (about 3 weeks ago) I wanted to start shooting with a longbow. After only picking up the recurve for about a couple months. It was a cheapie to get me by and to decide whether I wanted to pursue Trad or not....

:knothead:    :banghead:    :banghead:   the intisapation is killing me! I keep looking at diff. websites with my mouse button over "order now!"  ... lol

so to get my by just a little longer...

Give me your reason why you like your longbow over your recurve, or just like it in general?

Open to all thoughts, .02, etc.

Boy did you bust open a topic.

Good luck. I think you have answered you own question, shoot as many as you can for free and go with the one that fits.  Wait until the State shoot and tell folks what you are doing. No one will have a problem letting you shoot their bow.

Oh, and if you find that perfect bow you are an oddity. That is why we all keep buying.  It never ends!!!!!!

I prefer a longbow but do shoot recurves from time to time. I like a straight grip on my bows and like a light mass weight bow. If i were you i would wait and shoot all that you could before you buy. And check out the classifieds here, there are always really nice bows to be had at a fair price.
Good luck with your search. It only took me about 18 bows before i found the perfect one for me.

Well, I love them both... The advantage of a LB over a recurve is you never have to worry about were the stringer or stringers are. IMHO the LB is far tougher than a recurve... There's a Bear Montana in TG classifieds right now. My first trad bow was the Montana and I still love it although it is not my go to bow. Good luck and have fun!!!!

What m midd said.  Try them out and you can get some great bows to try on the classifieds.  Also sounds like you might be able to test drive and buy at the soot.  Nothing better

Edge, could you go to the spring-fling at the end of this month?  Lots of bows to try there.

Find the one that fits your bow hand.(One that I like, you might not and vice versa). Then for poundage,it should feel smooth to your natural draw.Hold it back for estimated 10 seconds. If any of that is much of a fight or strain move on to the next.Ive always shot recurves better, but love longbows and selfbows too.I know guys that shoot longbows better and always have. Its a very individual thing.
Now then, the first critter you get with a trad bow will be special. You wont regret getting rid of your wheelie.Welcome aboard.Best of Luck.

Recurve for me. My decision is based 100% on aesthetics of the recurve. They just look and feel best to me. I don't care if the LB is easier to quiet and I don't care if the recruve might be a little quicker.

Have to admit that I'm only skin deep!

hey no problem there bowild, to each his/her own... I just fell in love with it when I saw and shot with a gentleman shooting a beaty of a longbow with bamboo arrows. Super nice fellow as well.

Long bows are just wayyyy Cooler    :saywhat:

Personally, I like them both.  It usually comes down to a specific bow instead of design.

Rivers, I'm thinking over time I'll be the same. I see a recurve here and there that I really like

Ok, so I'll throw a can of gas on this fire!     :campfire:   For my shooting style, a 3 pc recurve has proven to be more accurate and forgiving than a 1piece longbow. The recurve only has a very slight edge in accuracy and forgiveness for me over a 3 pc longbow, though. I think it's due to the heavier mass and weight of the risers in 3 pc bows.

I shoot both, but for me, the lower the wrist is for the bow handle the easier it is on my my bow shoulder, but I shoot both equally as good, or is that bad, I guess it depends on how you look at it.

You won't be sorry, but wait until you can shoot some LB's and then decide what you want.

Good luck.

The Bear Montana is a good starter longbow. Got one a month ago to "try longbows out" and i think i might actually shoot it better than a any of my other bows. Didnt take long to dial it in, and within 30 mins i was drilling groups at 25yds. Its a good bow for cheap
