Bear Takedown Gurus
« on: February 22, 2013, 11:22:00 AM »
I recently traded for a set of Paul built Schafer Bear T/D limbs. I've got a recently aquired solid brown laminate Gainsville B handle. The limbs fit my handle fairly well but the end of the wedge has a little wiggle/rattle in the pocket when unstrung. My old white tip limbs are so tight that its a little tough to close the latches. Will this little bit of play matter? I'm new to Bear takedowns. I put a small strip of moleskin on each side of the limb wedge and it took all the play out and the limbs are tight now. Am I good to shoot this bow like this? Is a little bit of wiggle/play OK when the bow is unstrung?

I'm sure others will weigh in on this as well.....

The wiggle when unstrung has never been an issue in my experience. I would be super cautious about putting anything on the wedges to tighten them up.

I've heard stories about stuff being added that made them so tight the latches "popped" when shot. Haven't had it happen to me though.

Be careful and as with most things YMMV

IMHO as long as you have the locator pins in the riser pocket that little rattle is no big deal. Once the bow is strung your good to go.
I had a small issue with the new limbs fitting my mag handle so I took out the pins. No big deal until I transported it unstrung in a bow sock. The bottom limb stayed in the sock when I went to remove it. What did Forest Gump say?  Something about stupid does...... I think you get the picture.

Thanks for the input guys. Like I say the Bear latch system is new to me. By a strip of moleskin, I meant I put an eraser-sized piece( 1/4") of Dr. Scholl's moleskin on the very ends of the bottoms side of the wedge. May try it without it and shoot some to make sure there will be no noise. Even with the molsekin the latches close easly and the limbs slide easily into the pocket.

Good.....you don't want latches so tight you have to "force" them shut. Not good.

Different limbs will fit different risers differently if you know what I mean. Certain limbs gravitate to certain risers for me anyway.

Good Luck!

You are fine, i have several sets of Schafer Bear limbs that are a tad loose. what you want to avoid is so tight that you have trouble locking down the latches, if so the latch can pop open and cause serious damage to the latch parts.
