Footing AD Hammerheads...?
« on: March 21, 2013, 04:46:00 PM »
G'day guys,

I am in the process of building up some heavy Dangerous Game arrows for our buff and scrub bulls and am keen to see if anyone has footed the normal Hammerhead shafts from AD?

I plan to be using one of the TuffHead line of BHs out of my 73# PSAX Black Widow for this sortie into 'brown underwear' hunting...lol.

I have little exposure to carbons & footing but know I want to stick with the AD hammerheads as they shoot well for me. I had planned to make up some heavy woods, footed but don't have the place now to make up fine looking timbers so it's into the carbon world for me.

What size alloy shaft would I be looking at to act as a foot for these shafts if anyone has done it? Say a 2219 or bigger I am guessing??

Cheers and thanks you in the help of the modern day science of killing big nasty critters with Taliban proof arrows!

ak.

Charlie Lamb has listed 2413's for the AD and AD lites Al. I don't know if the Hammerheads are the same or not.

Hopefully someone will see this and let You know for sure.

The Hammerheads are thicker on the point end so I do not know about footing them but am sure someone will chime in.

3R sells a aluminum collar that fits them. I contacted Ted Fry of Raptor archery and he had something to do with the development of the Hammerhead shafts. He told me that the internal footing of the shaft makes it so you don't need any external footing and that the aluminum collars are not necessary. The shafts have a lot if extra meat on the business end as you probably know already. I'm REALLY tough on arrows, and discovered that the collars were not needed after many accidental misses.    :knothead:

I would give Ted a call and let him explain it. He is a nice guy and a wealth of knowledge. If your interested in trying them out, I have about a dozen of the collars I can send your way. They fit the HammerHead lites. Don't know if they fit the regulars. Might have to call 3R to verify if they will work or not.
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying,
"Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?"
And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Isaiah 6:8

I have been dealing with Ted at Raptor for a number of years, so yes... I might shoot off an email to see what he thinks.

Not that I have any doubts that the front end of the Hammerheads would do at its expected... It's just that for peice of mind, footing these shafts for a hunt that could end badly, I don't want a nagging feeling that a shaft may fold behind the BH upon the shot.

The 2413 may fit the Black AD's but not the wood grain, tried it, it just slipped over the exposed brass insert and would not go over the shaft. And its not even close to fitting a HH shaft.

Good luck on your hunt Al !

I am off to the hard wear store today to see what tubing they have in order to foot these larger than normal AD hammerheads.

Oh the fun of playing and tinkering!
