VAP arrows?
« on: March 23, 2013, 06:20:00 PM »
I have been shooting the Easton axis traditional 400s.  Thinking bout switching to the VAPs. I see that the 200 spine is about 9.7 Grains per inch. Which is basically what my trad axis are.
Has anyone shot these?  Are they close to the axis I am using?

I shoot the VAP 400's out of 50-57# set-ups.  Fly great with 200 - 300 grains upfront.  Have experience with both aluminum and stainless outserts.  Feel free to contact me with questions.

They are closer to Easton Injexion arrows, close to the same diameter. They are a G-nock size in diameter.Easton uses their new Deep Six HIT inserts with 6/40 thread size. The VAP have a couple of different insert sizes. They fit down inside the shaft and are like an outsert, one size flares up to a 9/32" point or a 5/16" point. And the inserts, one is aluminum at about 43 grs. and a stainless steel one at about 110 grs..You said the 200 spine has about the same GPI as your Axis Traditional 400,but a 200 spine is alot stiffer then your 400 Axis.

take a look at black eagle deep impacts. Just bought some for my compound and they are nice. they use firenock outserts and I havnt heard of anyone bending them yet which seems to be one complaint about vaps.  got a dozen deep impacts with the outserts for $120 on archery talk from a dealer.

If you foot the axis arrows they become pretty close to indestructible.

Link to sizing chart, check on manufacturers website for the outside diameter of your shafts and match to the od of the ones listed.

Just did mine and they are almost indestructible. I also were breaking them, but not now. I put 1 1/2" of an aluminum arrow. Hit a rock head on and it just mushroomed the point. By adding the foot it did not change a single thing.

Well I have gotten a couple to try. They shoot amazing. I am using the SS broadhead adapters and both arrows have cracked. Is there a better adapter or is there a better option?

I'm currently playing around with two options.  One involves the use of an external footing of stainless tubing to reinforce when using the VAP stainless or aluminum inserts.

Have had really good luck with AeroOutserts from Firenock.  Playing with a 1 1/8" piece of 5/32" aluminum rod (approx. 51 grains) along with AeroNock as internal footing and to increase FOC.

I'll let you know how they work out.

I like the vap's . only have used the alum insert outserts. they suck in the durability dept. Good penatration with them though. I shot slam through a 85 lb pig with a 40lb recurve with 175gn 2 blade. impressed with flight and ease of tune. Just need a better way to get a broadhead screwed in them. I plan to shoot a turkey with them in a few days.

Bob. Do the aerooutserts actually go over the shaft as well rather that just seating flush to the cut end of the shaft?

Yes on the AeroOutserts.  Easier to pull from 3-d targets than VAP inserts and seem to be stronger by design.  They are made to specific tolerance for different size shafts (500, 400, 340, etc.) as well.

I'm also playing around with Easton Injexion with same set-ups.  Initially they seem to be a bit tougher (a little higher gpi weight as well).
