Remembering Grousehaven
« on: March 25, 2013, 10:26:00 PM »
Just wanted to share an experience I had 24 years ago and a great bow to remember it. At age 28 while employeed at The Sport Shop of Grifton, NC I was fortunate to be able to attend the last hunt at Grousehaven at the invitation of Bear Archery. Unfortunately Mr. Bear had passed the year before, sure would have liked to meet him. I just purchased a Bear Custom Takedown to commemorate that hunt. I don't know who they have building them, but the workmanship is excellent and it shoots great. I decided to outfit it with a Kanati Pro Angle Quiver from Anneewakee Archery. Thanks John Dill for making a great quiver that really completes the package. Below is a couple pictures one of the group I hunted with and one of the bow.

If you recognize any of the folks in the photo, sure would like to hear from them. I'm in the Realtree jacket, holding the bow on the front row.

Good stuff Mike. Did you see the home movies I got from George that he made up there?

Don,
I did see the movie. That was cool, brought back alot of memories. Joe Engle was returning from a hunt the day I was heading up. I met him in the airport in Detroit. A couple years later the hunt moved to Alabama, he was there the week I went then.

Mike, I was a dealer from Anniston, Ala. and was invited to be in on "The Last Hunt" at Grousehaven also. They told us that you guys would come in the day after we had left. I had a photo of us standing around the same sign you guys had your photo taken, but I gave it to a friend to add to his collection of important archery things he's collecting. It was a beautiful place and I was honored to have been a part of "The Last Hunt". I took a nice 5 pt. opening morning and our chef, Cliff White, cooked deer meat for all of us while we were there. Joe Engle insisted on skinning it for me when I got it back to camp. Just thought I'd share this with you..... Jerre Peak

Very cool, I wish I could have gotten a chance to attend a hunt a Grousehaven. Was Bill Bowyer still running it when you were there?

Great stuff. I was too young and missed that boat but I know a few that hunted there with Pappa Bear. He was a big inspiration to many of us young archers back in the early days. Great Memories.
