AD arrow setup
« on: March 27, 2013, 12:54:00 AM »
What is your setup for your AD arrows. I am looking at the Arrow Dynamics and received one to try out today. It was flying very good from my bow. It is the traditional series but black no problem but I may get the wood grain not sure. The arrow came to me with a wrap and four feather fletch and I guess the standard insert it is 30" bop.. I tried a 175 gr point and a 145 gr point and they both were flying great the 145 may have been a tad better but it was very close. My bow is 66" 56#@28" I draw 29.5" I did mount a broadhead and the cutting edge is a little to close for comfort. I am looking to go to 30.5"-31"bop.

Can you tell me if a AD arrow needs to be footed and what is the standard insert material? Will the half to one inch increase in shaft length change the spine in this arrow vs a standard type of carbon shaft? Do these shafts need to be trimmed from the nock end or point end like most other shafts get trimmed? I know these arrows are a little different in design and just looking for some ideas. I have never shot a 4 fletch arrow before today but I like it. Advice, opinions and your experiences appreciated.

I just started shooting them a while back.  Others will have better info for you, but I will through out what I have found and read.

I have never heard of a trad shaft that is black.

I have heard that you can cut the back, but generally cut the front.  I read in one place where someone cut the back to get to a point where they could use a different size nock.  Not sure if that is possible.

Length is not supposed to be that big of an issue with them.

Inserts are aluminum standard, but you can get 100 gr. brass.  I have seen mention of 125 brass, but not see them for sale so far.

The standard shafts can be footed.  I have a note on the size someplace, but you can get it in the how to section.  I think it is a 24?? size.  I don't think there is a footing size for a hammer head.

I shoot a 30" trad lite with 100gr. inserts and 100-175 points at about 54@29, but have shot them in about 58@29 also and they flew fine.  Bare shaft was best at 200-250 up front.  I shoot the hammer head lite with aluminum insert and 175-200 head.  Not much help for your weight and standard AD, but I have seen where a lot of people shoot more weight than you are with heaver heads yet.

I made up 6 AD Trad Lites for myself because I use to sell them. I draw 27" and wanted my arrow 28.5" long because of my split vision aiming, didn't want 3-4" of arrow overhanging.

These arrows fly beautiful from my 52/57/58# recurves. Total arrow weight is 599-600 grains. I cut the shaft(point end) to 28.5". Installed a 100 grain brass insert, 35 gr broad head adapter. Installed a nock insert and 9/32 glue on nock.

Crown dipped, 5" feathers and 125 gr broad head gives me 599 grains total arrow weight. I have 260 grains up front. They fly great out to 45 yds. Even fly great with the 160 gr Snuffer. Everyone says AD's are one of the easiest shafts to tune, have to agree.

I have been shooting them for years. Trim from the point end only, they are tapered. If you do not like the AD nocks, you can get inserts for the Easton G nocks, that is what I use. Never footed one, have not seen the need, very tough shaft, I have never broken one. I draw 29" and leave my shafts 30.5" and install a 100 gr brass insert and I shoot 250-300 gr points. They fly perfect from all my bows, 55-60#, I have a 52# Cari-Bow Silver Fox that I am going to try some AD trad lites on, shot the AD trads and they fly great out of it but I am getting some noise that I believe is the shaft hitting the riser so want to try the lites to see if that takes care of that problem.

They are great shafts. I shoot the trads with 175 grain points and the 100 grain brass inserts from all my bows 55# to 60#. Mine are cut to 30" This gives me a 652 grain arrow. Don't cut from the nock end as you won't be able to install the proper nocks anymore.
